Visit the Amazon River

Our four days on the Amazon River with International Expeditions were spectacular. This journey is truly a trip of a lifetime, allowing you to witness the world’s largest river. The Amazon carries more water to the sea than any other river, and seeing this massive volume firsthand is undeniably impressive.

There are countless reasons to explore the Amazon.

1. The Amazon River

The Amazon River alone is an incredible reason to visit Peru. Its vastness, beauty, and significance are awe-inspiring. As you cruise along the largest river globally, you can appreciate its power and understand why it has attracted explorers for centuries.

2. Monkeys!

When traveling to South America, seeing monkeys is often at the top of many travelers’ lists. On an Amazon expedition, you’ll encounter numerous species. We spotted spider monkeys, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and capuchin monkeys within just three days.

3. The Cruise

Our adventure to the Amazon was with International Expeditions. The vessel we took was exceptional and enhanced our Amazon experience. The boat is equipped with unique amenities, including an air-conditioned multimedia lecture room, a fitness center, and our favorite feature—nightly cocktails and entertainment. Additionally, it boasts the largest observation deck on the Amazon, spacious rooms with modern ensuite bathrooms, and every suite includes a balcony!

4. Birds

If birdwatching is your passion, the Amazon is a paradise. Remember to utilize the eco-friendly notepad and pen provided by International Expeditions, as it uses stone paper, which is waterproof and tear-proof—this way, you can take notes on the various bird species you see. Expect to see an array of birds, including parrots, toucans, egrets, macaws, and kingfishers. The excitement of witnessing these magnificent creatures is unmatched.

5. Meeting the Locals

Life thrives along the Amazon River, providing a unique opportunity to visit villages and observe how the locals live in tandem with the mighty river. You’ll witness fishermen at work, children playing, and families engaging in their daily activities on the riverbanks, creating a fascinating cultural experience.

6. Pink Dolphins

The pink dolphin is a remarkable freshwater species found throughout the Amazon basin. Keep your eyes peeled for these playful creatures splashing in the river—however, be ready to act quickly, as they are swift swimmers!

7. Great Guides

During our daily excursions, we navigated the narrower tributaries of the river in small skiff boats. Each boat was manned by a guide, a captain, and equipped with a cooler filled with refreshing water and cool towels. Leaving the Estrella Amazonica, our guides expertly searched for wildlife, demonstrating an incredible ability to spot sloths nestled high in trees or tiny iguanas perched on leaves. Their keen observation ensured we didn’t miss the vibrant life of the jungle.

8. Spectacular Sunsets

We experienced dramatic sunsets night after night while floating on the Amazon. The views were breathtaking and ever-changing, ensuring that each evening’s sunset brought new beauty.

9. Creepy Crawlies

While the thought of encountering spiders might be daunting for some, guided tours in the Amazon allow for safe and thrilling experiences with the jungle’s unique inhabitants. Spotting a tarantula or scorpion in the wild is sure to create unforgettable memories.

There are countless reasons to visit the Amazon—it’s undoubtedly one of the most fascinating boat journeys on Earth. So why wait? The Amazon awaits your discovery!
