Experience Luxury at Monastero Santa Rosa
Italy’s Monastero Santa Rosa, located between Amalfi and Positano, stands out as a luxury hotel while honoring its spectacular past. The attention to detail in its accommodations and surroundings enhances the allure of this remarkable destination.
History of Monastero Santa Rosa
“I first glimpsed the property while vacationing with my sons in 2000 and was captivated by its structure, cliffside location, and expansive views of the Amalfi Coast,” owner Bianca Sharma shared. “I knew it would make a fabulous hotel. From there, I embarked on a decade-long journey to renovate and rejuvenate the property while respecting its history, and we opened Monastero Santa Rosa in 2012.”
Originally a Dominican monastery constructed in the 17th century, the property is perched on a cliff, overlooking the fishing village of Conca dei Marini. Its stone-colored exterior allows it to blend seamlessly into its lush surroundings, adorned by bright yellow lemon trees and seasonal pomegranates ready for harvest.
Renovation Efforts
Throughout its history, Monastero Santa Rosa has maintained pieces of its past, including a bell once used by guests to contact the nuns who inhabited the convent. Interestingly, the entrance features a small turnstile, which once allowed nuns to return the favor by providing fresh-baked sfogliatelle, a rich ricotta-filled pastry. Presently, it serves as a welcoming station for guests.
Sharma reflected on the discoveries made during renovations, noting, “We found several items left by the previous owners, including an official letter from the White House thanking the family for hosting Jackie Kennedy for lunch at the property.”
The hotel’s history is enriched by the legacy of Sister Rosa Pandolfi, a descendant of the noble family Pontone di Scala, who had the means to restore the church of Santa Maria di Grado and establish a monastery adjacent to it in 1681. Sharma emphasized the importance of preserving the monastic heritage, collaborating closely with local architects and historical authorities to maintain the property’s beauty and integrity.
Modern Amenities
Guests at Monastero Santa Rosa can indulge in a host of modern amenities, including a stunning infinity pool that appears to cascade into the beautiful waters of the Amalfi Coast. Furthermore, the culinary program, led by Chef Alfonso Crescenzo, features the Michelin-starred Ristorante il Refettorio. Don’t miss out on the carciofo e totanetti, a dish that combines confit artichoke, buttery potatoes, and squid—a true culinary delight.
Cultural Experiences
While Monastero Santa Rosa offers an immersive Italian experience within its grounds, guests can also explore the nearby town of Amalfi. It’s just a short transfer away and serves as a convenient starting point for ferry rides to Positano or exploring the stunning coastal drive.
According to Sharma, “It’s my hope that the entire experience soothes the soul and provides an opportunity to unplug from reality, even if just for a little while.” Each stay embodies a family atmosphere, driven by a seasoned staff that welcomes guests with warmth and hospitality.
