Bid on a Classic: 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva SCX Featured on Bring a Trailer

1992 Oldsmobile Achieva SCX 5 Speed: A Hidden Gem from the 90s

  • True to the advertising tagline, this is not your father’s (or grandfather’s) Oldsmobile.
  • With a 190-hp Quad 4 engine and a five-speed manual, this Achieva is a credible sport compact.
  • The rare SCX package brought even more performance goodies.

Close your eyes and picture a car with the following details: It hails from the 1990s, front-wheel-drive, powered by a screaming four-cylinder engine, and has a stiff suspension with fat anti-roll bars. It is a homologation special. Open your eyes. Were you expecting an Acura Integra Type R? Nope, it’s an Oldsmobile.

This 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva SCX is for sale on Bring a Trailer, and that three-letter suffix indicates something special. Built as a secret order-form cheat code to be competitive in showroom stock racing series like IMSA Firestone Firehawk, this Achieva boasts nearly all the performance upgrades GM could offer.

Oldsmobile as a brand concluded its journey mostly producing cars for the older generation, yet in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was still connected to its racing history. For example, in 1987, racing icon A.J. Foyt drove the experimental Oldsmobile Aerotech ST to a closed-course record of 257.123 mph at the Firestone test oval, achieving over 290 mph on the straights.

Powering the Aerotech was a turbocharged version of the Quad 4 engine featured in this Achieva. It displaces 2.3 liters, boasting four valves per cylinder and double overhead cams, producing 190 horsepower. In comparison, a 1998 Integra Type R’s 1.8-liter four-cylinder develops 195 horsepower, but the Olds surpasses it by 30 pound-feet of torque.

This Achieva SCX features the optional FX3 suspension package, which included electronically adjustable dampers and thicker anti-roll bars front and rear. However, for those interested in showroom stock racing, the C41 package was available, which offered a stripped-down version with a limited-slip differential. Nevertheless, the original owner of this vehicle opted for $1379 in luxuries such as air-conditioning and cruise control.

With only 1650 units produced between 1992 and 1993, this model is an exceptional find. The engine revs powerfully to 7000 rpm, and its handling is surprisingly agile. This car is not just better than expected for an Oldsmobile; it’s genuinely a competent sport compact. At local 1990s-themed car shows, it often garners the reaction, “I didn’t even know this existed!”

This auction has no reserve and is set to conclude on October 14.
