2025 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance Review
When the supercar holy trinity of the McLaren P1, Porsche 918 Spyder, and LaFerrari came out, their speed-boosting hybrid power was seen as a novelty. A way to quietly start the car as to not annoy the neighbors while also adding a quick boost of satisfying torque when their also-powerful gas engines needed a little kick. Fast forward to the new 2025 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance, and electrically augmented supercars are still here, continuing to expand today’s performance envelope. The mightiest AMG GT boasts 805 horsepower, and a quarter of that power comes from an electric motor. It’s also the most powerful car in AMG’s new lineup.
Hybrid Powertrain
The electric motor in the AMG GT 63 S E Performance is mounted to and acts directly upon its rear axle, providing 201 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque to the rear differential via a two-speed automatic transmission. Thanks to the AMG “4MATIC+” mechanical all-wheel-drive system, the electric motor can also send its power to the front if wheel slippage at the rear is detected.
Innovative Battery Technology
The 400-volt, 6.1-kWh battery pack—positioned above the rear axle for optimal weight distribution—utilizes an unconventional cooling system that sends a non-conductive fluid to each battery cell individually, rather than using air or other indirect cooling methods. AMG claims that the lithium-ion battery technology in the 63 S E Performance is derived from the system found in its Formula 1 car.
Performance Metrics
The battery can deliver enough energy for a continuous 94-hp motor output but can peak at 201 horsepower. As a plug-in hybrid, the GT63 S E Performance can be plugged in to charge, allowing for a yet-to-be-announced electric-only driving range. However, don’t expect too much; the four-door AMG GT63 S E Performance with a similar powertrain has an EV-only range of just 7 miles. Nevertheless, the total output of the electric motor and the 603-hp, 627-lb-ft AMG 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine stands at 805 hp and a gut-churning 1,047 lb-ft of torque—eclipsing even that AMG GT four-door mentioned earlier. AMG states that the GT 63 S E Performance can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 2.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 199 mph.
Driving Modes and Features
As is customary with modern AMG models, there are several drive modes available, including “Comfort,” “Slippery,” “Sport,” “Sport+,” “RACE,” and “Individual” to enhance performance under various conditions. Additionally, because this is a hybrid vehicle, “Electric” and “Battery Hold” modes have also been included.
Conclusion
The AMG GT 63 S E Performance showcases all the hybrid supercar’s unique features, such as starting silently. However, when the driver demands power, both the electric motor and V-8 engine respond swiftly. While AMG is clearly invested in this hybrid setup, further judgment will be reserved until we can experience driving this new beast crafted in Affalterbach.
