iBestTravel’s Automobile All-Stars Winners of 2020
This year’s evaluation features a truly remarkable crop of cars—21 in total—each representing some of the best and most interesting new or significantly revised vehicles available in 2020. For the second consecutive year, testing occurred in the Palmdale, California area, where the incredible, albeit often imperfect, roads of the Transverse Ranges serve as the backdrop for our evaluations, complementing the Streets of Willow Springs road course at Willow Springs International Raceway.
Testing Environment
The Streets track, while not the largest or fastest at Willow Springs, is well-suited for our no-lap-times approach to evaluation. Its 1.6-mile layout, featuring 13 turns across natural high desert terrain, mimics a scenic stretch of curvy mountain road, free from the distractions of oncoming traffic. While several of this year’s All-Stars would thrive on a faster track, such a setting would only offer insights into their track preparedness, which misses the core focus of our road car assessment.
Comprehensive Evaluation
The track is merely the starting point for three days of evaluation by our team of staff members and freelance contributors. Following an initial phase of acclimatization to the track characteristics and indulging in exhilarating speeds, we transition to the Lake Elizabeth region. Here, we engage in two full days of driving on a meticulously selected route designed to challenge every aspect of a street car’s performance. With mixed pavement conditions that alternate between perfect stretches and rugged sections, alongside winding curves juxtaposed with straightaways, our route serves as a robust test of handling, ride quality, and noise levels.
Celebrating the Best Cars
After dedicating three days to evaluating all 21 cars, we each select our favorites and tally the results, determining the highest-scoring vehicles that will be recognized as iBestTravel’s All-Stars Winners. Following this, we take this elite group for additional driving and photography over another two days—a celebratory conclusion to our event.
