Chevrolet Corvette C8 Impresses at Nurburgring
The new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 has made waves in the automotive world, showcasing its capabilities on one of the most challenging racetracks in the world. After extensive testing and comparisons with its rivals, we now know how quickly this groundbreaking mid-engine sports car can lap the famed Nürburgring circuit in Germany. The answer? An impressive time of 7:29.9.
Reported initially by CNET’s Roadshow, this remarkable lap time was revealed in a trailer for an upcoming documentary about the C8 Corvette. An exclusive glimpse of the 7:29.9 lap time was shown while the camera panned over the challenging Nürburgring racetrack. This has since been confirmed by Chevrolet, underscoring the performance capabilities of the Corvette.
According to Chevrolet, the “2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe with Z51 Performance Package clocked an un-certified lap time of 7:29.9 at the Nürburgring Nordschleife last summer during vehicle development.” Notably, the lap was driven by Oliver Gavin, a seasoned Corvette Racing driver who has won five class titles at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The Corvette’s Impressive Competitors
This remarkable time places the Corvette among elite company. Other high-performance vehicles have also made their mark at the Nürburgring, such as:
- McLaren MP4-12C – 7:28
- Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 – 7:28
- 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 – 7:29.60
- 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE – 7:16.04
- Lamborghini Aventador SVJ – Current record holder at 6:44.97
Given that the C8 Corvette’s lap record was set with the base model, which boasts 495 horsepower, automotive enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating how the upcoming Corvette Z06 will perform. The more powerful variants are expected to have even more impressive track times and may outpace competitors like the Camaro ZL1 1LE, especially considering the previous-generation C7 Z06’s 7:13.9 record at the Nürburgring.
