Experience the Vibrant Autumn Foliage in New England
If you’ve ever traveled through New England during fall, you’ve probably experienced the joy of walking amidst rust-colored leaves, hiking rugged hills, or driving down open roads enveloped in captivating hues of greens, oranges, reds, and browns. Fortunately, weather experts anticipate a vibrant (and possibly early) season this year for leaf peepers.
Expert Predictions for Fall Foliage
According to a Fall Foliage Forecast released by Yankee Magazine’s NewEngland.com, there is “potential for a big color punch this year if the right weather scenario lines up.” The magazine’s fall foliage expert, former meteorologist Jim Salge, indicates there are two possible outcomes for this year’s foliage, both of which promise beauty.
- The first scenario suggests that this year’s especially dry summer might lead to more intense foliage colors, particularly if it is accompanied by an early cold spell. Cold fronts from Canada could result in a dazzling display, albeit potentially short-lived.
- The second scenario involves tropical weather activity resulting in a longer-lasting color display that remains visually appealing, though perhaps less intense.
In addition, stressed trees often change their colors earlier. When this occurs, they tend to produce red pigments more prominently as the green fades. Consequently, a brief but vibrant burst of color is expected in late September in northern New England and from mid- to late-October in southern New England.
Unique Features of New England’s Autumn
Jim Salge also shared insights into what makes New England particularly special during this time of year. “About 90% of the land in New England is forested. In the northern zones, much of the forest is dominated by sugar maple, known for its ability to change from yellow to bright red depending on the weather conditions each year. Leaf peeping is ingrained in the culture. People travel to experience the brilliant colors, and while COVID-19 has altered traditions, the outdoors remains one of the safest places to enjoy nature. There are numerous ways to appreciate the beautiful tapestry of colors and the crisp autumn weather.”
Top Viewing Locations
Some of Jim’s recommended viewing spots include Smugglers Notch in Vermont and Crawford Notch in New Hampshire. These protected forest areas have been shaped by glaciers in the last ice age, providing spectacular opportunities for further exploration.
