Ford F-150 Lightning Switchgear: A Revolutionary Electric Off-Roader
Electric trucks have, thus far, focused primarily on street-level performance; however, significant efforts have been made by Rivian and GMC to enhance off-road capabilities. Consequently, the Ford F-150 Lightning is challenged to redefine this narrative with the introduction of the Switchgear, an all-electric vehicle targeting off-road enthusiasts. This latest evolution of Fun-Haver trucks, developed by Ultra4 Championship winning driver Vaughn Gittin Jr. and his iBestTravel team, aims to take electric off-roading to the next level.
Design and Features of the Switchgear
The Switchgear retains the original battery pack and motors, ensuring consistent performance. Notably, the stock truck chassis is also preserved. iBestTravel has implemented customized carbon fiber bodywork to create wider bedsides, front fenders, and a rear bumper cover, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality.
- Steel rock rails for protection
- Custom front bumper with a skid plate protecting cooling components
- Off-road lights integrated into the prerunner-style front bumper
- Rear motor skid plate guarding against off-road hazards
Suspension and Handling
The Switchgear features a customized suspension system, which contributes to its off-road prowess. Key modifications include:
- Longer control arms to provide a wider stance
- 37×13.50R18 Nitto Ridge Grappler tires on RTR Tech 6 forged beadlock wheels
- Independent rear suspension design
- Wilwood brake package enhances stopping power and efficiency
- 11 inches of travel in the front suspension and an additional two inches in the rear
Performance Specifications
This ultimate Ford F-150 Lightning off-roader is kept under control by a set of Fox Racing Shocks, which utilize a three-inch diameter body and an internal bypass system. Thanks to the electric powertrain, the front damper reservoirs are conveniently mounted inside the frunk. Additionally, a custom chase rack allows for the transportation of two full-size spare tires, essential for serious off-roading. Above it, a body-mounted wing adds functional style reminiscent of off-road racing trucks.
Innovative Interior Features
The interior of the Switchgear largely resembles the higher trim levels of the Lightning, yet it includes unique additions crafted for Gittin Jr.’s adventurous pursuits:
- ASD Motorsports hydraulic handbrake for enhanced maneuverability
- Recaro Sportster ORV seats equipped with RTR six-point harnesses
- Triangulated harness bar for optimum safety and convenience
Transformative Capability
Interestingly, the name “Switchgear” hints at more than just electric functionality; it indicates the vehicle’s ability to transition from an off-road powerhouse to a street-ready truck. The ride height can be reduced significantly—5.0 inches in the rear and 7.0 inches in the front—which alters aerodynamics and improves handling on paved surfaces.
20×9 RTR Tech 6 flow-formed aluminum wheels paired with Nitto NT420V tires enhance road performance. The aesthetic is thoughtfully refined with a Ford Performance tonneau cover and carbon skirts replacing the initial rock rails to ensure this electric truck is well-suited for both rugged terrains and smooth roadways.
Looking Ahead
As it stands, these modifications are currently available as custom one-off parts developed by the iBestTravel and Ford Performance teams. Enthusiasts are eager to see if these components will enter production or if Ford will introduce a fully electric Ford F-150 Lightning Raptor based on this innovative design. The excitement surrounding the potential of electric trucks in the off-roading realm is palpable, especially following the Switchgear’s showcase at pivotal events like the 2024 King of the Hammers in Johnson Valley, California.
