2025 Genesis G80 Improves Big Time on Old Model’s Fuel Economy

2021 Genesis G80: A New Face in Luxury Sedans

The all-new 2021 Genesis G80 sedan has made its debut, attracting attention with a stunning design characterized by its revamped front fascia, graceful roofline, and overall aesthetic appeal. However, what lies beneath the sleek exterior is equally important, especially regarding fuel economy and performance.

Engine Options and Fuel Efficiency

Launching in the U.S. market, the new G80 will offer two engine configurations. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has estimated the fuel economy figures for both, giving us insight into how this luxury mid-size sedan will compete against other vehicles in its class.

Engine Choices

  • 2.5-liter Turbo Four-Cylinder:
    • Fuel Economy: 23 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, 28 mpg combined (rear-wheel drive)
    • When opting for all-wheel drive, fuel economy drops to 22/30/25 mpg.
  • 3.5-liter Turbocharged V-6:
    • Fuel Economy: 19/27/22 mpg (city/highway/combined) with rear-wheel drive
    • With all-wheel drive, figures decrease slightly to 18/26/21 mpg.

Interestingly, the four-cylinder engine surpasses the fuel efficiency of the previous G80’s non-turbo 3.8-liter V-6, indicating a significant improvement in efficiency for the 2021 model.

Comparative Performance Analysis

How does the G80 fare against its competitors? The current BMW 5-Series provides a range of engine options, including a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that yields 25/33/28 mpg (city/highway/combined) and appears to outperform the G80’s comparable engine.

Moreover, the six-cylinder options offered by BMW result in better mileage compared to the G80’s V-6. For reference, the fuel economy of the G80’s four-cylinder is indistinguishably close to that of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class and only slightly lags behind the Audi A6.

However, it is essential to recognize that fuel economy is just one facet of a vehicle’s overall performance. While the G80 may trail slightly in terms of fuel efficiency compared to heavyweights like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes, it remains to be seen how the vehicle performs in other crucial areas. We eagerly anticipate further evaluations of the G80 to determine its full range of capabilities and features.
