Changes to the Jeep Grand Cherokee L
- Jeep has removed the V-8 option from the 2024 Grand Cherokee L, leaving the 293-hp V-6 as the sole engine option.
- The three-row SUV was previously available with either a V-6 or a 357-hp V-8, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
- According to a statement from a Jeep representative, the take rate for the V-8 was under 4 percent.
The three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L is following in the tire tracks of the Wagoneer twins and the shorter two-row Grand Cherokee by quietly removing the V-8 from its options. In November 2023, Jeep discontinued the 5.7-liter and 6.4-liter V-8 engines from both the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer and 2024 Grand Wagoneer. Consequently, the Grand Cherokee L now exclusively offers the V-6 option.
The discontinued 5.7-liter V-8 engine produced 357 horsepower and was compatible with rear- or all-wheel drive configurations. In terms of towing capacity, the V-8 could handle up to 7200 pounds, whereas the V-6 had a limit of 6200 pounds.

The V-6 engine, now the only available option, generates 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Similar to the V-8, it can also be equipped with either rear- or all-wheel drive. There is a possibility that Jeep may introduce the 4xe hybrid system, currently offered on the two-row Grand Cherokee 4xe hybrid model, into the three-row variant going forward.
A spokesperson for Jeep confirmed to Car and Driver that the engine was phased out of production in the third quarter of 2024, noting that the take rate for the V-8 during its final full year of availability was less than 4 percent.
