Introducing the 2025 Lamborghini Urus SE: A Revolutionary Plug-In Hybrid Super-SUV
You knew this was coming—Lamborghini’s been telegraphing its intentions to electrify its lineup for a while. Now, following the exotic Revuelto supercar, the first mainstream—if you can call an Urus super-SUV “mainstream”—plug-in hybrid Lambo is here, and it’s no bulls#%t. The new Lamborghini Urus SE out-muscles the recently updated 657-hp Urus S and Urus Performante models, delivering an electrically assisted 789-hp punch. That’s enough, Lamborghini claims, to improve its power-to-weight ratio over that of the Urus S, despite the battery-laden hybrid’s obvious weight gain.
Powertrain and Performance
The electric assist takes the form of a 189-hp, 356-lb-ft permanent magnet synchronous electric motor embedded in the Urus SE’s eight-speed automatic transmission, supported by a 25-kWh battery stuffed under the cargo area’s floor. Combined with the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 ahead of that transmission, which makes 611 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque on its own, peak output rises to that 789-hp figure, achieved at 6,000 rpm. Peak torque rings in at 701 lb-ft, available from 1,750 rpm to 5,750 rpm. The battery’s 25-kWh capacity is enough for a claimed 37 miles of electric-only driving range, though final EPA estimates are forthcoming.
Impressive Acceleration and Handling
Besides claiming the title of “most powerful Urus ever,” the Urus SE plug-in hybrid is also said to reach 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and be capable of 194 mph. Since this raging, electrocuted bull weighs nearly three tons, Lamborghini has wisely fitted electrically actuated anti-roll bars. These bars can stiffen in corners to reduce body roll and relax when traveling in a straight line to improve ride quality. This setup runs on a 48-volt electrical system. Drivers can select from several drive modes: all-electric (EV Drive), Hybrid, Performance, and Recharge, in addition to the usual Strada, Sport, Corsa street and track modes, and the off-road modes Neve, Sabbia, and Terra.
Design and Aesthetics
The Urus SE wears a host of cosmetic upgrades aimed at improving the SUV’s aerodynamics. It features a unique liftgate, with LED taillights terminating in Y-shaped clusters that echo a full-width grille motif. Along with a new rear diffuser, rear downforce increases by 35 percent at higher speeds compared to the Urus S. Unlike other Uruses, the license plate nacelle is situated in the bumper, enhancing the tail’s appearance. The headlights are more squinty and rounded, aligning with what appears to be a more domed hood design and a unique front grille and intake configuration.
Innovative Features
There are also modifications to the underbody air vents and ductwork, with the SE’s nose designed to direct 30 percent more cooling air at the front brakes. Enhancements extend to the massive 23-inch wheels, wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires, and a variety of vibrant hues among the available paint colors.
Fuel Economy Expectations
Of course, the stat that matters nearly as much as the mighty power output is its EPA-estimated fuel economy. While this detail hasn’t been officially revealed, the regular Urus models set a low bar at just 16 mpg combined. Will the Urus SE achieve more than 20 mpg (after the battery is depleted)? Despite this uncertainty, the Urus SE plug-in hybrid delivers what Lambo customers desire: thrilling performance with less environmental impact.
