We knew this was coming ever since the current-generation Lexus LX SUV arrived for 2022 with “only” a twin-turbo V-6 engine. This engine, with some minor modifications and tuned to run on premium fuel, is shared with Toyota’s Tundra pickup truck, Sequoia large SUV, and the smaller and newer Lexus GX. Moreover, it’s also available in hybridized form in Toyotas, slightly nudging those rigs’ fuel economy northward while considerably increasing their power output. The question on many minds was why Lexus’s top SUV didn’t offer the hybrid, the ultimate configuration of this powertrain. Fortunately, that changes now.

Introducing the LX700h

For 2025, Lexus is adding the LX700h hybrid to the LX’s lineup that, until now, has included only the non-hybrid LX600. The LX700h retains the same 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6 as the LX600 while incorporating electric components, including an electric motor situated between the engine and transmission, paired with a nickel-metal hydride battery beneath the rear floor.

Power increases from 409 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque in the LX600 to an impressive 457 hp and 583 lb-ft in the LX700h. The battery, located under the rear floor beneath the third-row seat (if optioned) or the empty cargo floor in two-row configurations, required a reworking of the frame cross rail that holds the spare tire below. Lexus reassures that the new cross beam doesn’t affect the LX’s departure angle off-road.

Notably, the Toyota versions of these hybrids, such as the Tundra and Sequoia, deliver slightly less power at 389 hp and 437 hp, respectively, but maintain the same torque output as the Lexus models. This inconsistently is attributed to differences in recommended octane levels and other minor modifications. Consequently, Lexus claims that the hybrid system boosts the EPA combined figure from 19 mpg to 20 mpg without compromising towing capacity, which remains at 8,000 pounds, equivalent to the LX600.

New Overtrail option for Every LX

As the saying goes, if something’s worth doing, it’s worth Overtrail-doing. Therefore, Lexus is introducing an off-road-focused Overtrail trim level to the LX lineup this year, joining the Premium, F Sport Handling, Luxury, and four-seat Ultra Luxury trims (equipped with a rear center console and no third-row seat). The Overtrail trim, akin to the same variant on the smaller Lexus GX550, encompasses essential features such as front and rear locking differentials (complementing the locking Torsen limited-slip center diff standard across the LX lineup), 33-inch all-terrain tires, 18-inch wheels, additional skid plating, dark gray exterior trim, black fender flares, and a 2.4 kW AC power inverter onboard. It is customizable with or without the third-row seat.

Even in non-Overtrail LXs, the hybrid’s electric motor proves beneficial in specific off-roading scenarios. When fine throttle control is paramount, the LX700h can operate solely on electric power in low range, providing advantages on “rocky paths, dirt roads, and deep snow.” More broadly, the LX700h’s powertrain can deliver maximum torque across a wide rpm range, reaching up to 3,600 rpm.

Anticipate More Details Soon

In addition to the exciting addition of the hybrid and the freshly announced Overtrail, Lexus is working on unveiling the pricing details for the 2025 LX family, along with specifics regarding which grades will be available with the LX700h. However, it appears that every trim can be paired with either powertrain. Furthermore, images of the Overtrail are on the way, so stay tuned for future updates.
