2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS: An Overview of Luxury Electric Innovation
Calling the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQS a Tesla slayer might seem like a stretch; however, its advanced features and specifications certainly hint at a compelling alternative. Inspired by the EQS concept revealed at the 2019 Frankfurt show, the production EQS is set to arrive on our shores in 2021, featuring an EV-specific platform capable of housing a substantial battery pack designed to compete with the driving range of the Tesla Model S.
2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS: New Electric Architecture
Mercedes plans to introduce six EVs to the market by 2022, and at the forefront of their electric vehicle pursuits is the EQS sedan. Unlike the GLC-based EQC electric crossover, the EQS will be built on a dedicated EV platform known as EVA2. Although it shares some characteristics with the S-Class of Mercedes EVs, the EQS will not share its architecture with the recently redesigned flagship sedan. While specific specifications remain under wraps, it is anticipated the EQS will debut with an all-wheel-drive configuration (one electric motor at each axle) and an approximately 100-kWh battery pack.
2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS: Big Range
If reports from Daimler’s Ola Källenius are to be believed, then the EQS is expected to deliver an impressive driving range of 435 miles on a full charge. Nevertheless, this remarkable range remains unconfirmed, and we should expect clearer information regarding the EQS’s driving capabilities upon its launch in the coming months.
2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS: Decadent Design
The production EQS is set to draw styling inspiration from its concept counterpart. However, photos of a camouflaged EQS released by Mercedes suggest a slightly more conservative design for the production model. Notable features include a smaller front grille, a more raked beltline, and a taller rear end, making these prototype EQS sedans appear less imposing than the concept. Although the production-spec interior has yet to be revealed, it is expected to reflect the opulence found in the S-Class line.
2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS: The Price of EV Luxury
Production of the EQS is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2021 at the Sindelfingen factory in Germany. It is anticipated that the EQS sedan will be the first model from the Mercedes EQ sub-brand to reach the United States market, especially with the EQC’s launch having been officially delayed. Although pricing details remain undisclosed, it is expected that the 2022 Mercedes EQS will enter the market with a six-figure starting price, positioning it within the luxury electric vehicle segment.
