2021 Pickup Truck and SUV of the Year Contenders

On Day 2 of the Pickup Truck and SUV of the Year 2021, we gathered data on each vehicle’s articulation and began our testing in the dirt.

Pickup Trucks Under Evaluation

This year’s standout contenders included:

  • 2021 Ram 1500 TRX
  • 2021 Jeep Gladiator Mojave
  • 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon EcoDiesel
  • 2021 Nissan Titan Pro4X
  • 2021 GMC Canyon AT4

SUVs Competing for the Title

The following SUVs were evaluated:

  • 2021 Land Rover Defender 110
  • 2021 GMC Yukon AT4
  • 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71
  • 2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro

Testing at T&J Performance Center

We visited T&J Performance Center located in Orange, California, where we utilized the company’s RTI (ramp travel index) ramp to assess each truck’s suspension articulation.

Once all the trucks completed the RTI ramp test, we ventured out into the dirt trails. These testing areas included steep inclines and heavily eroded dirt sections, allowing us to see how well the vehicles controlled traction and maintained articulation.

Performance Evaluation in the Dirt

During the rugged trail evaluations, we closely monitored tire performance in loose conditions and rocky terrains. The suspension systems were effectively tested under the rough trail conditions.

These evaluations continued into the night, providing insights into how the headlights performed under dusty conditions as well.

Conclusion

Our thorough testing showcases the capabilities of the leading 2021 pickup trucks and SUVs in extreme situations. Detailed evaluations will continue, allowing us to recommend the top contenders to potential buyers.
