Future of the Porsche Cayenne: Fully Electric SUV by 2030
The Porsche Cayenne name will be branded on SUVs with at least three different powertrain setups by 2030, as confirmed by the German automaker, which has released images of camouflaged Cayenne prototypes testing. Expect significant advancements from this sporty midsize luxury SUV, including an all-electric Cayenne for its fourth generation.
Fully Electric Porsche Cayenne Confirmed for Next-Gen SUV
The fourth generation of Porsche’s largest luxury SUV is set to go fully electric, utilizing the recently introduced Macan Electric SUV platform, known as the PPE setup. Porsche CEO Blume states: “The Cayenne has always defined the sports car in its segment. In the middle of the decade, the fourth generation will set standards in the segment as an electric SUV.” This next-gen Cayenne EV will differ from the expected codenamed “K1” large three-row electric SUV, which will utilize a distinct platform.
Based on the camouflaged prototype images, the new Cayenne EV is anticipated to feature quad-motif upper headlights positioned above the nose, coupled with lower full-beam headlights integrated within the fascia. A large rectangular air opening with both open and closed shutters can be noted, alongside a substantial camera or sensor centered in the front bumper. At the rear, a new grid structure with a prominent clear element is visibly integrated into the taillights, accentuated by a robust rear bumper. Additionally, roof rails appear to be in place for cargo attachments, enhancing its functional appeal.
Gas Porsche Cayenne Not Going Anywhere Soon
To clarify the three powertrains for the Cayenne, the current gas- and hybrid-powered third-gen Cayenne models will continue to receive updates and improvements for several model years beyond 2030. These models will coexist with the new electric fourth-gen Cayenne, merely sharing a name and similar exterior aesthetics. This approach reflects a longer overlap between gas and electric models compared to the smaller Macan line, which is set to eliminate gas-powered versions entirely by 2025, leaving only the Macan Electric variants.
Porsche has confirmed that V-8 Cayenne trims will remain available for many years, with adequate technical measures ensuring that the twin-turbo engine complies with future legislative regulations.
Electric Porsche Cayenne PPE Chassis
The forthcoming fourth-gen Porsche Cayenne Electric SUV is expected to arrive around 2027, possibly extending to 2030. It is likely to incorporate many features from the recently launched Macan Electric, which currently shares the market with the “old” gas models, scheduled for a limited time only. The Macan EV’s PPE framework boasts a 12-module, 100-kWh battery pack designed to power both front and rear electric motors for an all-wheel-drive capability. Macan Electric trims offer performance ranging from 335 to 630 horsepower and 415 to 833 lb-ft of torque, alongside an electric driving range of up to 310 miles for the more efficient models. Furthermore, all U.S. Macan EVs come with adjustable air suspension systems—features anticipated in the luxurious Cayenne EV when it debuts by the end of the decade.
