2025 Porsche Taycan 4S: EPA Driving Range Estimates May Understate Performance

2021 Porsche Taycan 4S Overview

The 2021 Porsche Taycan 4S has proven to be a serious competitor in the electric vehicle market, particularly against Tesla. Although it’s slightly less powerful than other Taycan variants, the 4S is significantly more affordable, positioning it competitively alongside the Model S. Despite its price point, it remains an exhilarating vehicle to drive. Recently, additional details have emerged about this entry-level Porsche EV that is now available in U.S. dealerships.

The Taycan 4S comes with an EPA-estimated range of 203 miles, a figure that may underestimate its capabilities given prior experiences with the Taycan lineup. This range estimate applies specifically to 4S models equipped with the upgraded Performance Battery Plus. According to EPA ratings, these particular models achieve better range than the Turbo and Turbo S variants, which are rated at 201 miles and 192 miles, respectively. Notably, the less-efficient versions of the Taycan significantly exceed their EPA estimates in real-world scenarios. In fact, our testing of the Taycan Turbo S yielded an impressive 254 miles between charges.

Performance Battery Plus

The initial batch of Taycan 4S models reaching dealerships features the Performance Battery Plus specification. Base models with the standard battery will arrive later, likely accompanied by a different EPA range figure. The Performance Battery Plus, priced at $6,580, enhances the standard 79-kWh battery pack to a more potent 93-kWh unit. This upgrade results in increased horsepower: instead of the standard 429 horsepower (or 522 with launch control overboost), these models deliver 482 horsepower (or 563 with overboost). Furthermore, the available 4S models include luxurious features like a fixed glass panoramic roof and an upgraded mobile charging cable.

Real-World Range Testing

There are indications that the true driving range of the Taycan 4S will likely surpass the EPA estimate. Porsche has commissioned third-party range testing from AMCI, which reported strong results. This independent firm is estimating an impressive 290 miles for the Taycan 4S Performance Battery Plus in Range mode. This figure appears feasible for the least powerful Taycan, which shares a battery size with the energy-hungry Turbo S that was tested at 254 miles under real-world conditions.

Home Delivery Options

In response to current market dynamics, Porsche is facilitating the delivery of the Taycan 4S through contactless home delivery options. However, potential buyers should note that this model is not inexpensive; the starting price for the upgraded battery version is at least $114,340. If you opt for the standard battery version, expect to pay six figures as well.
