2025 Subaru WRX Sportswagon Overview
Besides a turbocharged BRZ, we’re hard pressed to think of anything Subaru fans want more than a wagon form factor and a manual gearbox. We count ourselves among those who pine for the days when a WRX could be had with three pedals and plenty of extra room for activities. Unfortunately, it’s not 2006 anymore and that option seems lost to us.
Whatever, we’ll have to live with that. However, that reality becomes just a bit harder to stomach when we discover that the unicorn manual transmission WRX Wagon is actually real, but we’re simply not getting it in the United States. According to a report from CarScoops via The Drive, the Subaru WRX Sportswagon will be available in Mexico for the 2025 model year. Seriously, Subaru? Mexico is right there, but we can’t get it? This is disappointing!
The 2025 Subaru WRX Sportswagon will feature the same 271 horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine found in the 2024 WRX sedan sold here in the states. What’s more, the six-speed manual transmission will be the base version! It’s almost as if Subaru is indifferent towards us. While we don’t know the exact amount of cargo space this stunning wagon will offer, the rear seats come with a convenient 40/20/40 split enabling easy transport of larger items. If you live in Mexico, Subaru is currently accepting pre-orders with plans to launch the WRX Sportswagon later in 2024. For now, we’ll just sulk while we wait.
Jokes aside, it could be argued that part of this situation is our own doing. As consumers, we vote with our wallets and unfortunately, the manual transmission isn’t gaining popularity among the general United States population. Subaru representatives shared with us that they skipped the manual gearbox on the 2024 Impreza because less than 4% of sales from the previous generation were manual transmissions, and that number is “falling fast.”
Perhaps a similar trend was observed when the WRX was last available in wagon form in the United States. Maybe we just didn’t appreciate it enough back then? Regardless, we sincerely hope our friends to the south enjoy the WRX Sportswagon immensely, so that we may live vicariously through them.
