The newest Tesla Model 3, the so-called Highland variant, is reaching for higher performance, finally garnering a capital-“p” Performance version. This revival presents the sportier trim level of the previous Model 3 electric sedan. Tesla claims that the Model 3 Performance is the most powerful ever, delivering a thrilling 510 hp and achieving an impressive zero to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds. The claimed top speed is a remarkable 163 mph.
What Makes It Fun
With 510 hp and 547 lb-ft of torque generated by its dual electric motors, the updated Tesla Model 3 Performance promises to deliver exhilarating driving experiences. According to Tesla, these power figures translate to 22% more continuous power, 32% more peak power, and 16% more peak torque compared to the previous Model 3 Performance.
To accommodate these enhancements, Tesla engineers have incorporated new electronically adaptive dampers. These dampers can either stiffen for enhanced cornering and stability or relax for a more comfortable daily driving experience. Unlike its predecessor, the new Highland variant offers significant improvements in ride comfort and overall refinement, as experienced during testing of the regular single motor rear-drive and dual-motor Long Range versions.
Moreover, Tesla emphasizes that the Performance’s chassis boasts improved stiffness and lower rolling resistance, contributing to a more agile and enjoyable driving experience, especially on winding roads. Additionally, the new adaptive damping system can receive over-the-air (OTA) updates, enabling potential improvements in handling for both track and street driving.
The new Track Mode V3 integrates motor and suspension controls, along with powertrain cooling and vehicle dynamics to ensure a more predictable and consistent track experience. Drivers can calibrate settings such as stability control, regen braking, and handling balance to suit their preferences while unleashing the fun of track driving.
Equipped with Pirelli P Zero tires on all four corners, the Model 3 Performance maximizes grip, even with its rapid acceleration. Additionally, the new 20-inch aluminum wheels are lightweight, enhancing overall performance. Larger brake components contribute to increased stopping power and a consistent feel at all speeds.
Better Aero, Better Range
Similar to the regular Model 3 Highland, the latest Performance model features redesigned front and rear fascias that improve aerodynamics. Moreover, a carbon fiber spoiler on the trunk lid enhances drag reduction, resulting in 5% less drag, a 36% decrease in lift, and a 55% boost in front-to-rear lift balance compared to the previous Model 3 Performance.
The combination of these aerodynamic adjustments and lightweight materials contributes to an EPA-estimated range of 296 miles on a single charge for the new Performance model; this is just 45 miles short of the less powerful dual-motor Long Range model. Nevertheless, it showcases outstanding efficiency considering the significant power enhancements.
Sports Seats and Carbon Fiber Interior
The Model 3 Performance showcases the Highland’s modern interior cabin, featuring ambient lighting, a rear-seat screen, and sound-deadening materials for a quieter ride. Additionally, sport bucket seats that are both heated and ventilated, along with carbon fiber dashboard trim, enhance the sporty aesthetics of this model.
All of This for How Much?
The new Model 3 Performance starts at $54,630, including destination and a $250 order fee. Additionally, it qualifies for the Federal EV tax credit, effectively lowering the price to $47,130. This represents excellent value given the features and performance offered. When compared to traditional gas-powered competitors like the BMW M3, the Mercedes-AMG C63 hybrid, or the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, the Model 3 Performance emerges as more affordable by at least $20,000 while boasting allegedly superior acceleration.
We look forward to experiencing this remarkable vehicle firsthand, as Tesla indicates that deliveries are set to begin between May and June this year.
