Tony Awards 2022: Celebrating Broadway’s Best

Broadway’s best were recognized Sunday night at New York’s Radio City Music Hall during the prestigious Tony Awards. Hosted by Broadway veteran Ariana DeBose, who recently starred in the film “West Side Story” and won an Oscar for best supporting actress, the event spanned a plethora of talent and memorable performances.

Major Winners

“A Strange Loop” dazzled audiences, taking home awards for best musical and best book of a musical. This compelling show follows the journey of an aspiring playwright and explores his dizzying, personified thoughts. Additionally, it won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for drama, further solidifying its impact on the theatrical landscape.

Moreover, the pop-musical “MJ,” which showcases the life of Michael Jackson during one of his tours, won four awards, including best performance by an actor in a leading role. “The Lehman Trilogy” also shone brightly, winning five awards including best play.

Broadway’s Resilient Return

The previous year marked a triumphant, albeit spotty, return for Broadway after it was shuttered for over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Various shows began to reopen in September 2021; however, subsequent outbreaks led to the cancellation of several performances, demonstrating the ongoing challenges faced by the arts community.
