The new 2025 Toyota 4Runner is here, featuring the sixth generation that introduces several firsts. Notably, the Trailhunter trim level is a standout addition. Launched alongside the 2024 Tacoma pickup, with which the 4Runner shares many mechanical components, the Trailhunter is designed as a complete overlanding solution for off-road enthusiasts seeking adventure. Although the 4Runner Trailhunter does not come standard with a camper box or rooftop tent, it is otherwise well-equipped for those aiming to explore off-road terrains.
Suspension Lift, With Help from Old Man Emu
Similar to the TRD Pro model, the Trailhunter boasts a taller suspension, providing a lift of 2.0 inches in the front and 1.5 inches in the rear. This setup includes 2.5-inch forged Old Man Emu shocks with external piggyback reservoirs, alongside specially crafted front upper control arms bearing the “Trailhunter” branding and a compass insignia.
Meaty Meats
The 4Runner Trailhunter is fitted with 33-inch Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires, complemented by striking bronze-colored TRD wheels borrowed from the Tacoma Trailhunter.
Standard Locking Rear Differential
In contrast to the base models that rely on an automatic limited-slip rear differential, the Trailhunter offers a more robust electronic locking rear differential, tailored for challenging low-traction conditions.
Underbody Protection
Enhanced security features include rock rails that safeguard the rocker panels and “high-strength steel” skid plates to protect vital underbody components.
That Snorkel Isn’t Really a Snorkel
Exclusive to the Trailhunter, this distinct intake system snakes up the passenger-side A-pillar, designed to provide clean, dust-free air to the engine. This feature resembles a snorkel but lacks a seal for deep-water wading. Rather, it helps in sourcing cleaner air during desert excursions.
Standard Hybrid Power
The Trailhunter comes equipped with Toyota’s i-Force MAX hybrid four-cylinder engine, generating a potent 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. This is a considerable upgrade over the non-hybrid variant’s 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The powertrain incorporates a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission, complemented by a nickel-metal hydride battery.
ARB Rack Attack
This feature includes a newly designed ARB-branded roof rack on the Trailhunter, providing a versatile base for various accessories, potentially accommodating a roof tent or other gear for outdoor adventures.
Color-Changing Auxiliary Lights
The Trailhunter also features a 20-inch LED light bar integrated into the grille and Rigid LED fog lights, which can switch between white and yellow beams—a unique characteristic exclusive to this model.
Power On the Go
Every hybrid version of the 4Runner, including the Trailhunter, is equipped with a 120-volt, 2,400-watt AC power inverter, featuring two outlets for convenient power supply on-the-go.
Air Compressor Onboard
The Trailhunter houses a built-in air compressor, perfect for inflating tires or gear after low-traction off-road adventures.
A Special Interior
Interior features include a unique “mineral” gray color scheme adorned with yellow-orange and greenish-gray accents, along with elegant marbled light gray trim.
Oh, and It Looks Badass
The redesigned 4Runner boasts bold fenders, striking lighting, and an adventurous lower stance compared to its Land Cruiser counterpart. The retro-styled rear quarter windows, reminiscent of earlier models, and the iconic “TOYOTA” grille further enhance its visual appeal.
