2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI Review: Enhanced Power and AI Features

The All-New 2025 VW Golf GTI: Performance, Technology, and Style

Over the past few years, Volkswagen has narrowed its Golf hatchback lineup in America to just the GTI and R performance models. Concerns about the future of the long-running Golf hatch in the U.S. have been alleviated as the new year brings the overhauled 2025 VW Golf GTI, complete with a fresh design and tech upgrades, including an integrated ChatGPT assistant.

The GTI Ain’t Done Yet

The 2025 GTI features an upgraded 2.0-liter turbo engine that is 15 hp more powerful, now producing 262 hp and exclusively paired with a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. Unfortunately, the manual transmission option has been discontinued after the 2024 model year. This decision was primarily driven by low international demand for manual transmissions despite their popularity in the U.S., where they had a 40-percent take rate.

With updated head- and taillight units, the 2025 GTI exudes a sharper look, drawing some design cues from the outgoing R trim’s aesthetic. It features illuminated VW badging and twin chrome exhausts protruding from the rear bumper. New wheel designs, ranging from 17- to 19-inches, add a modern touch, while new colors such as Crystal Ice Blue Metallic and Grenadilla Black Metallic enhance the exterior options, along with an optional black-painted roof.

Inside, a sleek black interior with red accents sets the tone. The refreshed infotainment system is equipped with new hardware and software, bringing remapped pages and updated graphics. The previous year’s seamless touchscreen format has been replaced with a new tablet-like display that stands out from the dashboard.

Volkswagen has wisely eliminated the touch-sensitive steering wheel controls of the current GTI, which were prone to accidental activation during spirited driving. The new design includes physical buttons, thus reducing unintended interactions. However, volume and temperature controls remain touch-sensitive, now accompanied by a more ergonomic ledge for users to rest their hands.

The updated Golf offers a choice of either 10.4- or 12.9-inch touchscreens, with the GTI specifically equipped with the larger unit, along with a standard 10.2-inch driver display. Standard features include automatic climate control, keyless entry, cruise control, park assist, and customizable 30-color ambient lighting.

That Touchscreen Gets Chatty

The highlight of the infotainment system is the built-in ChatGPT, which will also be featured in the Tiguan SUV and ID electric models like the ID4 and ID7. Utilizing Cerence Chat Pro voice integration, users can ask questions, make navigation requests, adjust climate control settings, and manage audio functions simply by saying “Hello IDA” or pressing a steering wheel button.

Volkswagen emphasizes privacy in this AI integration, asserting that “ChatGPT does not gain any access to vehicle data; questions and answers are deleted immediately to ensure the highest level of data protection.” If the performance lives up to expectations, this voice-activated onboard assistant could significantly enhance the driving experience.

So, When Will We See That New GTI?

In Europe, the Golf remains versatile, offering various models including the Golf eHybrid with 201 hp, which can reach 268 hp in the Euro GTE trim. Both versions utilize a turbo 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine combined with a 19.7-kWh battery pack. They feature impressive electric driving range capabilities, achieving up to 62 miles on electric power alone and a total hybrid range of up to 620 miles.

The updated all-wheel-drive 2025 Golf R is set to debut later this year, while the refreshed GTI will enter the U.S. market sometime in 2024. As such, now may be an opportune moment to explore current inventory options for the older models while waiting for the exciting arrivals of the new GTI and Golf R.
