2025 Volkswagen Taos: Unveiling Its Most Flawed Feature

2025 Volkswagen Taos: A Comprehensive Overview

The Volkswagen Taos small SUV is undergoing a notable refresh for the 2025 model year, with exciting changes introduced in the Mexico-built version for the U.S. market. Initially launched in 2022, the Taos currently ranks 10th out of 17 in MotorTrend’s Ultimate Car Rankings for subcompact SUVs. Consequently, the question arises: has VW successfully addressed the shortcomings that hindered this compact SUV’s performance?

Performance Enhancements

While we await the opportunity to test drive the refreshed 2025 Taos, it is evident that significant improvements have been made, particularly regarding the all-wheel-drive (AWD) models’ transmission. Previously, the seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic (DCT) did not meet VW’s typical standards, resulting in unrefined performance characterized by clunky starts and delayed upshifts. Fortunately, VW has responded to consumer feedback by replacing the DCT with an eight-speed conventional automatic transmission.

Moreover, the 2025 Taos boasts enhanced power. The EA211 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine now delivers 174 horsepower, an increase from the previous 158 horsepower, while the torque remains unchanged at 184 lb-ft. Notably, the AWD model continues to benefit from an independent multilink rear suspension, unlike the front-wheel-drive (FWD) version.

Interior Updates

The dashboard has received a modern redesign, featuring a compact 8.0-inch infotainment display alongside capacitive HVAC controls on SE trims and above. The Taos maintains its range of S, SE, and SEL trims:

  • S: Two-tone black and gray cloth seats
  • SE: “CloudTex” and cloth upholstery
  • SEL: Leather seats in dark blue or a two-tone black and gray combination

Exterior Design Changes

The 2025 Taos also flaunts fresh exterior styling elements, such as a new grille, a rear light bar featuring an illuminated VW badge, and enhanced projector LED headlamps across all models. New wheel designs, available in 17-, 18-, and 19-inch sizes, as well as vivid new colors including blue, bright green, and gray, further elevate the vehicle’s appeal.

Advanced Safety Features

All Taos models come equipped with an array of driver assistance features. These include:

  • Travel Assist (keeps the SUV centered in its lane with active cruise control)
  • Front collision warning and brake assist
  • Rear traffic alert
  • Adaptive front headlamps and dual-zone automatic climate control on SE trims and above

Even though the updates are promising, we will not know if VW has effectively improved the value of the higher trims of the Taos until later this year when pricing is announced. Additionally, the Taos’s crash safety ratings might require substantial structural changes for significant improvement, despite the new headlamps potentially enhancing visibility according to IIHS standards.

Conclusion

As we anticipate the release of the 2025 Taos, one can only wonder how it will fare against other small SUVs in future comparisons, particularly against our previous winner, the Hyundai Kona. The enhancements made in this model may very well change the course for the Taos in a crowded marketplace.
