2025 Volvo XC90 Review: The Luxury SUV Redefining Class Without Change

2025.5 Volvo XC90: Exciting Updates and Improvements

Hard to believe, but it’s true: the Volvo XC90 has been on the market for nearly a decade with few significant updates. The Swedish luxury SUV’s design still maintains its appeal, inside and out. However, enthusiasts are eager for something new. We are pleased to announce that Volvo has finally given the XC90 a thorough update for the 2025.5 model year. The new design is fresh and modern.

Those who cherish the existing XC90 might be relieved to know that it hasn’t actually changed that much. For those seeking a more radical departure in their three-row Volvo SUV, the new EX90 electric model will be available alongside the updated XC90.

Updated Design Elements

Unless you are a longtime XC90 owner or a Volvo dealer, you’ll likely need side-by-side comparisons to differentiate the “new” 2025.5 XC90 from its predecessor. The front fascia boasts the most significant updates, with a new grille featuring diagonal slats. Moreover, new T-shaped “Thor’s hammer” headlights blend seamlessly into the wider grille. The redesign also includes a full-width lower air intake and slightly reshaped fenders and hood.

Interior Enhancements

Inside, Volvo has made notable improvements. The centerpiece is the new 11.2-inch display, which replaces the previous 9-inch screen while maintaining a portrait orientation. The interface has been modernized and is derived from the all-electric EX90. Additionally, the 360-degree parking camera has received upgrades for enhanced usability.

Thoughtful Design and Comfort

The dashboard now features a sleek horizontal-line design and a restructured center console that optimizes space utilization. Eco-friendly upholstery options and an enhanced speaker mesh for the optional Bowers & Wilkins stereo are among the attractive offerings. Furthermore, improved ambient lighting elevates the cabin experience.

Suspension Improvements

The suspension system has also undergone enhancements, featuring new Frequency Selective Damping shocks that promise to improve ride quality. These shocks operate based on the speed of wheel impacts—offer firmer damping for sharper impacts while providing softer damping for gentler bumps.

Powertrain Options

For those concerned about performance, rest assured that the powertrains remain unchanged. The XC90 will continue to offer the B5 and B6 mild hybrids, along with the T8 plug-in hybrid, which provides a claimed 32 miles of EPA-rated electric-only range. All options utilize the same efficient 2.0-liter gasoline engine.

Availability and Pricing

The eagerly anticipated 2025.5 XC90 is set to arrive in dealerships during the first quarter of 2025, with pricing starting at $59,745—a modest increase of $1,850 over the previous version. For those who prefer the classic XC90, the existing model will still be available, labeled as a 2025 version, for a few months longer.
