60 Dolphins Sighted in a River in Waikato, New Zealand

Dolphins Delight in New Zealand’s Piako River

It’s no secret that certain aspects of the natural world have thrived during quarantine and lockdowns. For example, large schools of fish have been seen in Venice’s clear canals, while wildlife has roamed freely in National Parks. Recently, a captivating video emerged from New Zealand, showcasing approximately 60 dolphins swimming in the Piako River, to the astonishment of local residents.

Enthralling Sight Captured

Peter Pakinga, who works along the banks of the Piako River in the North Island with Hauraki District Council, filmed the dolphins swimming along the river, likely in search of food. He live-streamed the event on the Hauraki District Council Facebook Page, inviting followers to share in the awe. “It was incredible; I wanted everyone to experience the moment,” Peter remarked.

Community Response

The video received an overwhelmingly positive response online, with viewers expressing their delight at seeing dolphins gracefully enjoying the river. “Peter was just getting to work when he heard about the dolphins in the river and rushed down to take the video. Our district is famous for the Hauraki Rail Trail, showcasing the stunning scenery at the base of the Coromandel,” a representative from Hauraki District Council commented.

A Local’s Perspective

Kristy McPherson, another local, was passing through the area and noticed unusual activity on the river. She captured footage from a different perspective. “I was just driving my kids back to the first day of school after the country lockdown. I wondered what was disturbing the ducks on the Piako River, and upon looking over, I spotted dolphins! I pulled over and filmed them; there were at least 30 of the largest dolphins I’ve ever seen. It was so beautiful,” she shared.
