70th Anniversary of NHRA US Nationals: Hemi Shootout Returns

The Hemi Shootout Returns at the NHRA U.S. Nationals 2024

The Hemi Shootout has been a fixture at the NHRA U.S. Nationals for the past two decades. In 2024, this thrilling event will continue, thanks to the famed race team Sox & Martin and the McCandless Collection. The longstanding competition focuses on the 1968 Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda models, powered by the legendary Hemi engine, while operating under Super Stock H-class rules. This format guarantees exhilarating big wheelies, 8-second performances, and nail-biting races.

The Legacy of Sox & Martin

Ronnie Sox’s deep connection with the Hemi engine has played a crucial role in the legacy of drag racing. Buddy Martin, a Mopar legend, expressed his enthusiasm saying, “I’m so excited and pleased to have the Sox & Martin brand sponsor the Hemi Challenge at the 2024 NHRA U.S. Nationals, especially since this is the 60th anniversary of this tremendous engine. I’ve always been attached to the 426 Hemi engine.” Sox has propelled Hemi-powered Plymouth race cars to numerous victories and championships since 1965, solidifying the brand’s storied history.

A Tribute to a Historic Legacy

The McCandless Collection, a nonprofit celebrating historic Chrysler vehicles, particularly from the 1955–1961 “Forward Look” era, showcases the integral role of drag racing in automotive history. Mike McCandless, son of Herb and CEO/founder of the McCandless Collection, stated, “Thanks to NHRA, my father was able to make a career out of drag racing and the motorsports parts industry. Over 50 years ago, Buddy Martin gave my father a chance to showcase his driving and tuning skills.” This partnership exemplifies the appreciation for the sport while supporting the future of racing.

2023 Hemi Shootout Highlights

In a thrilling showcase, fans witnessed Steve Comella achieving his third consecutive Hemi Shootout class win in 2023. Driving a powerful 1968 Plymouth Barracuda equipped with a naturally aspirated 426 Hemi, Comella cruised through the competition with an impressive time of 8.30 seconds at over 160 mph, surpassing rival Jimmy Daniels in a 1968 Dodge Dart. Comella’s exceptional performance ultimately led to a grand prize of $15,000 and a custom trophy commemorating this prestigious competition.
