Discover the 750-Mile Trail Connecting New York City to Canada by Foot or Bike

Overview of the Empire State Trail

America has made significant progress in enhancing its trail systems in recent years. A standout example is the impressive 750-mile Empire State Trail, recognized as the longest multipurpose trail in the United States upon its opening in 2020.

Trail Connectivity and Features

The Empire State Trail spans from the southern tip of Manhattan to the Canadian border, connecting previously isolated off-road trails and adding nearly 180 miles of off-road paths to New York’s trail network. Additionally, the project involved upgrading 170 miles of on-road bicycle routes and adding numerous bike racks to support the increasing interest in cycling across the nation.

“Not only does it provide an opportunity to experience the natural beauty and history of New York, but it also gives New Yorkers from every corner of the state a safe outlet for recreation,” stated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo during the announcement of the project’s completion.

Recreational Opportunities

The Empire State Trail is designed to cater to various outdoor enthusiasts, including cyclists, hikers, runners, skiers, and snowshoers. Moreover, the trail also serves as a guide to some of New York’s renowned craft breweries. The state has collaborated with local brewers to develop an Empire State Trail Brewery Passport, allowing visitors to collect stamps from approximately 200 craft breweries situated within 10 miles of the trail.
