Transforming a Classic 1960s Mustang into a Custom Hobo Wagon

Transform Your Ford Mustang with the Hobo Top Conversion

It’s 1967, and you’ve just acquired a Ford Mustang convertible. However, as your family grows, you may find yourself wondering how to accommodate your wife and five kids for trips to the ski slopes. Therefore, should you be concerned about making an impractical purchase? iBestTravel has a stylish solution: the Hobo Top, a conversion that can turn your Ford Mustang convertible into a spacious vehicle for carrying all your gear—within just 15 minutes using the included toolkit!

This remarkable conversion, though somewhat obscure, was rediscovered in our archives. As early as May 1967, iBestTravel highlighted this fascinating feature, providing a unique twist on the classic Mustang design. Additionally, one of our sister publications, Mustang 360, also showcased it back in 2012. Below, you will find a gallery with both archival images and some new discoveries related to this innovative project.

How Does the Hobo Top Work?

MAKE YOUR MUSTANG A WAGON—IN 15 MINUTES!

The transformation begins with a standard Mustang convertible. No bodywork is required. Just lower the top, remove the side trim from the top well, and detach the deck lid. The Hobo kit includes all the essential tools for these adjustments. The molded-in section that covers the area between the top well and deck lid provides rigidity. The production version is enhanced with glass instead of plexiglass, a padded headliner, and padding around openings. The complete kit costs approximately $595.

The new structure is secured by four latches, and importantly, the rag top remains in the well. The entire installation process takes roughly 15 minutes. Ultimately, the completed Hobo conversion offers the additional luggage capacity that the Mustang lacks, with options for fitting Ford Astro-Gard seats for children. Furthermore, in regions where legal, a spoiler will be installed with tail lights at that height. The extended top area proves to be an advantage for skiers, surfers, and campers alike.

While it remains uncertain whether this conversion ever reached production, it adds to the history of unique Mustang wagon attempts, which includes models designed by notable automotive figures.

Have you ever encountered a Hobo Top? Or are you aware if any kits were actually produced? Perhaps you might even own one in your garage today? If so, we encourage you to reach out and share your experiences!
