First Stop: Berlengas Islands

Imagine a tiny archipelago off the coast of Peniche, featuring a solitary lighthouse, crystal-clear waters, and more puffins than residents. Welcome to the Berlengas Islands! After a slightly choppy boat ride from Peniche (pro tip: if you’re prone to seasickness, consider bringing motion sickness tablets), we spent our day exploring this little slice of paradise. The highlight? Snorkeling in the protected marine reserve. The water was so clear that we could see fish darting around our feet before even dipping in! We also hiked up to the lighthouse for panoramic views that will surely impress your Instagram followers.

Next Up: Monsanto

Have you ever thought about living under a rock? Well, the residents of Monsanto can certainly share their experience! This village in eastern Portugal is famous for its homes nestled between, under, and sometimes even within gigantic boulders. It feels like stepping into a scene from The Flintstones! We spent a delightful day wandering the narrow streets, marveling at the ingenious architecture, and pondering how people managed to build homes around these massive rocks. The cherry on top was witnessing a spectacular sunset from the ruins of the castle at the top of the hill. Pure magic!

Third Stop: Douro Valley

Wine lovers, this one is dedicated to you! While many are familiar with Port wine, the actual Douro Valley—where it originates—is criminally underrated. We spent several days cruising down the Douro River, visiting family-run wineries, and pinching ourselves because the beauty felt almost surreal. One of our favorite experiences was participating in the grape harvest at a small quinta (wine estate). There’s something uniquely special about squishing grapes between your toes, knowing they will eventually turn into delectable wine. We even attempted to recreate that iconic I Love Lucy scene!

Fourth Destination: Comporta

Are you looking for a chic beach getaway away from the Algarve crowds? Comporta is your answer. This laid-back village on the Troia Peninsula is where Lisbon’s cool crowd goes to unwind. Think long stretches of unspoiled beach, lush rice paddies, and a distinctly bohemian vibe. We spent our days here alternating between sunbathing on the beach, exploring rice fields by bicycle, and indulging in some of the freshest seafood we’ve ever tasted. Be sure to try the local specialty, choco frito (fried cuttlefish), which is a must-try!

Last but Not Least: Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês

For our nature fix, we ventured into Peneda-Gerês, Portugal’s only national park. This destination is a hiker’s paradise, boasting rugged mountains, crystal-clear lagoons, and charming villages that feel like a time capsule. We spent three days hiking through ancient oak forests, cooling off in natural swimming holes, and even spotting some wild Garrano ponies. The highlight was accidentally stumbling upon a local festival in one of the mountain villages. Before we knew it, we were dancing with locals and savoring traditional dishes. This was truly an authentic experience!

As we concluded our adventure in Portugal, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment in discovering some of the country’s best-kept secrets. The Algarve is indeed beautiful, yet there is so much more to Portugal than just its famous southern coast. Therefore, the next time you plan a trip to Portugal, consider stepping beyond the usual tourist trail. Trust us, you won’t regret it!
