Discover Andermatt: Your Ultimate Guide to the Swiss Alps

Discover Andermatt, Switzerland: A Traveler’s Guide

iBestTravel Destination Editor for Central & Eastern Europe recently traveled to Andermatt, Switzerland. Here, she shares some tips and insights for anyone planning a similar trip.

I have a thing about the Alps. I spend most of the year dreaming about snow-covered peaks, but I know from experience that summer in the Alps is just as magnificent, maybe even more so. I pictured myself in Andermatt for weeks in advance of my planned trip. It had been far too long since my last visit to Switzerland, and I was eager to experience the mountain town charm, epic scenery, and high-adrenaline adventures.

I landed in Zürich on a sunny Monday afternoon in early July. From there, it was a 90-minute drive past Lake Lucerne and into the Alps to reach Andermatt in the Canton of Uri. Here’s what I experienced during my visit.

Where to Stay and the Vibe

I stayed at the four-star Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen in Andermatt Reuss, which is the new part of town just a short stroll from the historic old town. The hotel, opened in 2018, showcases an alpine chic style with a cozy atmosphere featuring an open fireplace in the lobby. Hosting around 240 rooms and suites, the hotel also features a spa and wellness center, complete with a gym, sauna, steam room, and pool—perfect amenities for unwinding after an active day in the mountains.

Favorite Activity from the Trip

Hands down, completing the Diavolo Via Ferrata was the highlight of my visit. This climb, rated K2-3, requires no prior climbing experience, only a reasonable level of fitness, an adventurous spirit, and a head for heights.

I was guided by Markus Wey from the Mammut Mountain School and was equipped with all the necessary climbing gear—helmet, harness, carabiner clips, and gloves. After a thorough safety briefing, we made our way to the starting point near the famous Teufelsbrücke (Devil’s Bridge).

Upon beginning the climb, I clipped onto the steel cable and reached for the first rungs anchored into the rock face. The thrill of adventure and the stunning alpine landscape quickly made the effort worthwhile. The sound of water rushing through the Schöllenen Gorge below accompanied us throughout our 450m (1476ft) vertical climb. After a break two-thirds of the way up, which offered a splendid view and the opportunity to catch our breath, we completed the ascent in just over two hours. The panoramic views from the summit were awe-inspiring, providing that exhilarating “I did it!” feeling.

Most Scenic Experience of the Trip

Everything in Andermatt is picturesque! A particularly memorable experience was an e-bike ride through the Unteralptal valley to the Vermigelhütte mountain hut and back, making for a round trip of about 25km (16 miles). My guide and I opted for e-bikes for a leisurely ride through the scenic landscape. The path ran alongside the Unteralpreuss River, surrounded by high pastures, wildflowers, and majestic peaks.

Upon reaching the remote Vermigelhütte mountain hut in about an hour, we took a break. This hut serves as an overnight stop for hikers traversing the 81km (50 mile) Vier-Quellen-Weg (Four Springs Trail). Returning to town, we enjoyed views along the elevated route next to Andermatt Golf Course, which was recognized as Switzerland’s Best Golf Course in 2023.

Touristy Experiences

Switzerland’s mountain passes are legendary for their breathtaking scenery and history. I embarked on a thrilling drive along the Furka, Nufenen, and Gotthard passes. My guide, car enthusiast Armin Duddek, and I enjoyed a stylish ride in his Ferrari Portofino M Cabrio as we navigated the spectacular views of icy peaks, alpine lakes, and beautiful valleys.

Starting along the Furka Pass, we followed the same winding path taken by James Bond in the 1964 film Goldfinger, even passing a sign marking James Bond Strasse. After stopping at the famous Hotel Belvédère for a glimpse of the Rhone Glacier, we headed towards Nufenen Pass, where we spotted a group of ibex grazing on fresh snow.

As we continued our travel towards the Gotthard Pass, we visited Lago della Piazza and the Sasso San Gottardo museum nestled in the mountain’s heart. The beauty of the landscape paired with the thrill of the open road was unforgettable.

Delicious Cuisine

One of the best culinary experiences was at Gutsch by Markus Neff, where I enjoyed freshly made spaghetti crowned with Périgord truffles. As the finest restaurant in Andermatt, dining here is not only about the food; the location elevates the experience significantly.

For a taste of traditional Swiss fare, I recommend Restaurant Sonne in the old town. Their Älpler Magronen macaroni with potatoes and applesauce is a must-try. Don’t forget to sample the Swiss Mühl Saft cider, which perfectly complements the meal.

Souvenirs from Switzerland

Of course, I couldn’t leave without an edible souvenir: Swiss cheese. A visit to Alp Galenstock cheese dairy, about a 20-minute drive along the Furka Pass, offered insight into the cheese-making process. The Meyer family graciously allowed me to taste some of their delicious Mutschli cheese—a delightful treat!

Anyone passing by can stop at the Alp Shop across the road for cheese, yogurts, and homemade delicacies. Remember to bring cash, as the shop operates on an honor system.
