The Benefits of Traveling with Kids on the Alaska Railroad

Discover the Magic of Alaska through Train Travel with iBestTravel

Journeying by train through the wilds of Alaska was not something I expected to add to my gratitude list any time soon. However, it is a family adventure that will live in my memories as one of my life’s most fun and connective experiences.

Our family of four—Mom, Dad, Sister (9), and Brother (3)—values slowing down to create spaces for exploration and play. More often than not, our daily routine is busy with work, school, and social commitments. Thus, imagining ten days in Alaska filled with adventures instead of obligations excited my imagination.

Train travel offers this essential space. It transforms what can typically be a stressful journey into a relaxing, bonding experience, allowing families to explore together.

The Alaska Railroad: From Fairbanks to Seward

In the fall, we boarded the Alaska Railroad, which celebrated its centennial in 2023. This train provides a fantastic opportunity to travel from interior Alaska to the stunning coast, showcasing the state’s diverse landscapes—transitioning from an Arctic desert to a lush, temperate rainforest.

Completing its route from Seward to Fairbanks in 1923, the railroad has played a crucial role in connecting communities and supporting the state’s economy. For instance, Anchorage evolved from a tent village for rail workers to Alaska’s largest city.

Owned and operated by the State of Alaska, the Alaska Railroad prioritizes local residents, often stopping at flagged locations. Look for plastic chairs with flags along the tracks, marking these unique whistle stops.

For travelers, riding the Alaska Railroad provides unparalleled views while someone else navigates the challenging roadways and unpredictable weather. The hop-on, hop-off nature of the service allows for an incredibly customizable Alaskan adventure.

Onboard Experience

Within the Denali Star service, travelers can choose from Adventure class or Gold Star service. We opted for Adventure class on our trip to Denali. The comfortable bench seats, massive windows, and rooftop observation dome provided excellent views of the stunning landscapes.

As my daughter and I settled on the domed upper deck, we were mesmerized by the painted scenery—a tapestry of colors as the fall leaves transformed the world outside into a living canvas. We observed eagles soaring over the rivers and forests draped in mist.

During our train journey, we also enjoyed snacks from the café car, which felt reminiscent of leisurely mornings spent together over coffee at our local café. With large windows framing the outside wilds, we could easily chat and draw, keeping our adventure spirit alive.

The Gold Star service provided an elevated experience on our route from Denali to Anchorage. The captain’s chairs with drop-down tables were well-suited for projects, making it easy and comfortable to work on creative activities while enjoying the captivating views outside.

The Best Stops on the Alaska Railroad

The Alaska Railroad allows for flexible travel options, making it easy to choose longer journeys or shorter segments. We took advantage of several memorable stops, sharing delightful stories from our adventures. One noteworthy place we didn’t visit but recommend is Talkeetna, a charming town known for its fun feline mayors.

Fairbanks: Alaskan Wilderness and the Northern Lights

As Alaska’s largest city, Fairbanks retains a delightful small-town ambiance. We explored nearby attractions and enjoyed wildlife viewing along the river. In September, Fairbanks is one of the best places to experience the magical Northern Lights, bringing a sense of adventure during our trip.

Denali: Magnificent Scenery and Outdoor Activities

Our time in Denali was filled with excitement as we engaged in various activities to make the most of our visit. Upon arrival, we stored our bags at the depot and visited the visitor center, where rangers shared invaluable insights about the park and its landmarks.

To truly appreciate Denali’s natural beauty, we participated in several ranger-led hikes and also observed the fascinating kennel dogs. Bringing excitement to family members of all ages, the dogs play a vital role in conservation efforts throughout the park.

Anchorage: Culture and Family Attractions

In Anchorage, we encountered a rich tapestry of culture, especially at the Anchorage Museum, which boasts an impressive array of art. Additionally, the Alaska Native Heritage Center provided captivating stories and exhibits celebrating Native Alaskan culture and history.

Seward: Glaciers and Scenic Beauty

Traveling to Seward is like stepping into a fantastical realm. Whether arriving via train or driving along the stunning Turnagain Highway, the breathtaking scenery captivates every traveler. We visited the Alaska SeaLife Center, highlighting the region’s diverse marine life.

Our exploration continued with a hike to Exit Glacier, where we appreciated the interactive exhibits tracing its retreat. A thrilling day cruise across Resurrection Bay led to captivating wildlife encounters, creating lasting memories.

Alaska by Train: The Gift of Connection

This trip was truly a gift—a shared experience that immersed us in the beauty of Alaska, allowing us to disconnect from daily routines and reconnect with one another. Even a month later, my children still share stories about our Alaskan adventures, showcasing the profound impact our journey had on the entire family.

Through leisurely train rides and breathtaking environments, we’ve cultivated cherished memories that will last a lifetime. This unique trip not only drew us closer to the wonders of Alaska but also solidified our heartfelt intention to nurture connections within our family, celebrating the simplicity of travel together.
