Discovering Greek Islands: How Many Can You Explore in a Week?

How to Travel Around the Greek Islands

While ferries have traditionally been the primary mode of transport between the islands, it has become considerably easier and quicker to reach them by air. Although not every island has an airport, you can typically fly into one of the larger islands using domestic carriers like Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air, or Sky Express, and then take a short ferry to smaller nearby isles. If you are traveling via ferry from major hubs like Piraeus or Rafina, consider opting for the faster ferry options, which, although slightly pricier, will save you time.

My favorite method of travel involves sailing. If you charter a yacht with a skipper, you can explore various islands at a leisurely pace—unless you or your companions hold a skipper’s license and possess sufficient experience to navigate the craft yourselves.

Planning Your Island-Hopping Getaway

The period from May to October is recognized as prime time for visiting the Greek islands, particularly for those wishing to enjoy sunny weather and swim in the delightful Aegean Sea. However, be mindful that June through August can be particularly busy, especially on the most popular islands, with higher prices for flights and accommodation. Who wants to wait hours for a table at a famous restaurant?

Begin your planning by identifying your interests. Do you prefer beaches equipped with all amenities or secluded rocky coves? Are you drawn to high-end dining experiences or local tavernas? Ancient archaeological sites or vibrant nightlife? Consider whether you want to relax on one or two islands or see multiple destinations.

I recommend setting reasonable expectations and concentrating on one island group, visiting no more than two or three islands in total. If you decide to sail, you can certainly explore a different island each day.

Take Your Pick of Greek Island Jewels

Most first-time travelers opt for the Cyclades, focusing on Santorini for its iconic cliffs adorned with whitewashed buildings and Mykonos for its lively atmosphere. Once you have enjoyed Mykonos, take the ferry to Tinos, an island known for its exquisite farm-to-table cuisine, scenic hiking trails, and charming wineries.

Families traveling with children often prefer either Naxos, where kids can safely swim in shallow waters, or learn to windsurf. For couples seeking serenity with fewer crowds, the less visited Small Cyclades islands such as Schinoussa, Donousa, Iraklia, or Koufonisia offer tranquility.

For those enchanted by lush hillsides, shimmering turquoise waters, and pebbled beaches, the Ionian Islands beckon. Flying into Corfu allows for relaxation on sandy beaches and exploration of the romantic capital’s charming streets. From Corfu, a hydrofoil can take you to the twin isles of Paxos, where olive oil production thrives courtesy of its ancient groves. Renting a motorboat from Paxos offers an easy way to discover the hidden gem of Antipaxos, known for its clear aquamarine waters.

Further south in the Dodecanese, many travelers stick to Rhodes and its historic old town, where echoes of knights can be felt while strolling through the seaside village of Lindos. However, a short flight can take you to the more remote island of Karpathos, where the village of Olympos celebrates its rich traditions with vibrant culture.

Mapping out a Greek island getaway may appear overwhelming, yet regardless of the islands you select to visit, you’re bound to return with treasured memories that will last a lifetime.
