Idris Elba Discusses DJing in Ibiza, African Dream Projects, and Love

Idris Elba: A Journey Through Travel and Connection

Where have you just come back from?

I just did a crazy stint in Ibiza, DJing for Defected Records and at an insane villa for Grey Goose Altius, the new luxury vodka inspired by the rare natural luxuries of the French Alps. It was in Cap Martinet, only five minutes from Ibiza Town but quiet and secluded, on one of the highest peaks on the island. The energy out there is absolute madness, man. I should be exhausted but I’m buzzing.

Which is the fanciest hotel you’ve ever stayed in?

I don’t know about the fanciest, but the most special hotel to me is the one that Sabrina and I got married in, the Amanjena in Marrakesh. Beautiful gardens and courtyards with fountains and pink clay walls. You feel like you’re in your own private villa with private pools. Views stretch across the olive groves and palm trees, allowing guests to see the High Atlas Mountains in the distance. Such an incredible day.

Name a place you visited that lived up to the hype.

You know my dad was from Sierra Leone, and the connection that I feel when I’m there is so, so incredibly deep. I can’t really even put words to it. We’re working on a few projects out there now, including collaborating with the government to develop Sherbro, an island off the coast, and turn it into an eco-city. This initiative aims to go a long way toward reframing the way Africa in general is viewed.
