Impact of 2025 European Wildfires on Your Holiday Plans

Wildfires in Europe: Current Situation and Travel Advice

Wildfires in Europe are sweeping across some of the continent’s best-loved destinations, causing destruction and health risks. Below, we look at which countries and areas have been most affected and what this means for those planning to travel to Europe.

Where are the Wildfires in Europe?

As of Monday, August 12, at 4pm BST, wildfires are raging through the outskirts of Athens, Greece. Houses and businesses in the town of Varnavas were evacuated on the evening of Sunday, August 11. Since then, flames are reportedly reaching heights of over 20 meters, resulting in considerable damage to property and land.

Recent temperatures have consistently ranged between 35 degrees Celsius and 40 degrees Celsius, drying out the land. High temperatures, arid weather, and strong winds have contributed to the rapid spreading of the wildfires around Athens.

In 2023, fires have blazed in Croatia, Portugal, Greece, Spain, Italy, and Algeria, among other countries. Thousands of individuals, including tourists, have been evacuated, and airlines are providing repatriation flights to several affected destinations, notably the Greek islands.

What’s Causing Europe’s Wildfires?

The primary factors influencing the spread of fires include high temperatures, drought, and strong winds. Much of Mediterranean Europe is experiencing early heatwaves this summer. While various factors can spark a wildfire, such as campfires or lightning, elevated temperatures remain a critical element.

Advice for Those in Areas Affected by Wildfires

Currently, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FDCO) does not advise against travel to Athens or other areas recently impacted by wildfires. Nevertheless, for travelers whose visits are affected by wildfires, the official guidance is as follows:

“Be cautious if you are in or near an area affected by wildfires:

  • Follow @112Greece for official updates
  • Adhere to the guidance of emergency services
  • Call the Greek emergency services at 112 if you are in immediate danger
  • Contact your airline or travel operator for assistance with return travel
  • Enable the Emergency Alerts option to receive local government emergency notifications.

Refund Possibilities for Cancellations Due to Wildfires

The possibility of a refund depends on the circumstances. Last year, some flights and package holidays to severely affected destinations were canceled by tour operators, specifically flights and holidays to Rhodes, managed by companies such as Tui throughout July. In cases where your tour operator cancels your holiday or flight due to wildfires, you will generally be offered the chance to rebook or receive a refund.

However, flights and holidays to destinations not severely impacted are likely to operate as planned. Unless the FDCO issues a ‘do not travel’ advisory, insurance may not cover cancellations made simply due to personal choice, as it is not considered a necessity.
