The Role of Positive Psychology in a Post-Pandemic World
Hi, I’m Dr. Jenny Yu, iBestTravel’s Medical Expert and iBestTravel Travel Health Expert. Welcome to my column, where I share stories, insights, and perspectives on how you can take the “well” traveled path in your journeys.
Understanding Uncertainty in 2022
As we navigate the uncertainties of ongoing global challenges, many are questioning what’s next. The prolonged period of information overload has overwhelmed our capacity to process, often leading to anxiety and confusion. Healing from this trauma takes time, and everyone’s journey will be different.
Finding Positive Solutions
In times of uncertainty, I focus on positive solutions rooted in positive psychology—the science of enhancing the human experience. Key themes include:
- Meaning and purpose
- Coping strategies
- Self-compassion
- Courage
- Gratitude
- Positive emotions
- High-quality connections
Travel as a Means of Healing
The principles of positive psychology impact many aspects of our lives, including health and emotional connections. To find peace in the post-pandemic world, many are seeking courage, purpose, and meaningful connections.
My strategy isn’t about a significant transformation; instead, it’s the accumulation of small, positive experiences—where travel plays a vital role. A recent survey indicated that 97% of individuals feel happier with a trip planned. Personally, I have several upcoming trips, and the anticipation is already restorative. Novel experiences, such as surfing in Costa Rica or taking a cooking class in Provence, foster joy and engagement, motivating us to step out of our comfort zones.
Caring for Mental Well-Being
While we often emphasize physical health—hydration, nutrition, and fitness—it is crucial to also prioritize our mental well-being. Regardless of where you are on your journey post-pandemic, whether you choose to crawl, walk, or run, it’s essential to recognize that there is no set playbook for recovery. As Ethan Kross reflects in his work, “The mind is flexible if we know how to bend it.”
