Afrofuturism Exhibitions in New York City This Spring
As the United States celebrates Black History Month, several exhibitions have emerged around New York City, honoring the future of African Americans through the lens of Afrofuturism. This artistic and cultural movement merges black history and culture with futuristic, science fiction themes, manifesting in various art forms.
Afrofuturism can be seen in many creative outlets, providing a narrative that emphasizes the rich culture of Black Americans that’s not solely rooted in the past. Institutions like the Met, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and Carnegie Hall are presenting exciting Afrofuturist exhibitions that span from February into the spring months. Below are three prominent exhibitions to check out this season.
Carnegie Hall Presents: Afrofuturism
Carnegie Hall is hosting a citywide Afrofuturism festival featuring a variety of musical, literary, and artistic events this spring. This festival includes concerts by acclaimed musicians such as Fatoumata Diawara, a Grammy-nominated Malian singer and songwriter, and legendary DJ Carl Craig. Moreover, authors like Ytasha L. Womack, a notable figure in the Afrofuturism discourse, will also be present.
The festival culminates on April 3, 2022. Ticket prices do vary, so checking availability is advised.
The Met – Before Yesterday We Could Fly: An Afrofuturist Period Room
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has launched a permanent exhibition honoring Seneca Village, an early nineteenth-century African American community. Historically significant, this community was unjustly seized by the city of New York to create Central Park. The exhibition not only emphasizes African American history and artistry but also represents the fusion of past, present, and future through an Afrofuturist lens. Notable new commissions are displayed from distinguished artists, including Njideka Akunyili Crosby and Fabiola Jean-Louis.
Entry is included with museum admission, and this compelling exhibition has no scheduled end date.
Schomberg Center – Black Feminist Futures Series
The Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture is facilitating a monthly virtual discussion series that unites black female academics, artists, and thinkers to explore the intersectionality of Black feminism and Afrofuturism. Each session features notable guests from various backgrounds, adding depth to the conversations.
The upcoming event is on March 24, and participation is complimentary.
