Quarantine-Free Travel to Thailand
Thailand is resuming its Test-and-Go tourism plan from February. This means that fully vaccinated visitors can bypass seven-day quarantine and freely travel to any part of Thailand, provided they take a negative COVID-19 test on the first and fifth day of their visit.
Requirements for Fully Vaccinated Tourists
Fully vaccinated tourists from 63 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Germany, China, Singapore, Spain, France, Italy, United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia, can soon avail themselves of the Test-and-Go program again after its temporary suspension.
- Must possess COVID-19 insurance cover of at least US$50,000 (£36,600).
- Present proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test prior to departure.
- Undergo two additional COVID-19 tests upon arrival.
- Spend the first night and fifth night quarantining at a government-approved hotel while awaiting results.
Once tourists receive a negative test result, they will be free to explore Thailand in the same way as any Thai citizen.
Program Resumption and Safety Measures
Government spokesperson Taweesilp Wisanuyothin announced that the Test-and-Go program is set to resume on February 1, following the peak of the Omicron variant. The situation will be continually assessed to ensure safety standards are met.
Travelers are required to download the MorChana app, a tracking app that will remind them of the necessity to take another antigen test on day five. Children under 12 are exempt from vaccination requirements but must undergo testing.
Options for Unvaccinated Travelers
Unvaccinated individuals can visit Thailand under the Alternative Quarantine program. Key requirements include:
- Application for a Thailand Pass.
- Negative pre-departure COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours before travel.
- Insurance policy with at least US$50,000 coverage.
- Payment for quarantine accommodation and PCR tests.
Quarantine durations vary: Fully vaccinated travelers must quarantine for seven days while unvaccinated travelers face a ten-day quarantine. Both groups will undergo mandatory PCR tests.
Potential Tourist Fee
Furthermore, Thailand is contemplating a tourist fee of 300 baht ($9/£7) starting in April. If approved, this fee will apply to all international tourists and will be included in airfare. The revenue generated will support sustainable tourism management and accident insurance for travelers.
Thailand continues to assess the COVID-19 risk across different provinces, categorized into dark red, red, and orange zones. Travelers are strongly encouraged to monitor current travel advice and remain aware of face mask mandates in public spaces.
