Driving an oversized luxury vehicle on the tight roads of Montecito at night was as gripping as driving a high-performance sports car on those same winding roads. Though it posed certain challenges, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 carved its way through unscathed. The active suspension does a spectacular job of offsetting body lean, allowing the GLS to navigate corners with ease.
Curve mode was beneficial during tricky maneuvering, and for nerve-wracking pockets of darkness, the active LED headlamps illuminate the path effectively.
The scenic route included California State Routes 192, 150, and 33, eventually directing us to Highway 101 with a detour to Beverly Hills. With an official zero-to-60-mph time of 4.8 seconds, this luxurious cruiser can hustle from a standstill to the next traffic light swiftly, making the newly crowned S-Class of SUVs feel nimbler than its size suggests.
Shifting is quick and smooth, and the power delivery is seamless. The steering feedback and braking are impeccable, giving the Maybach GLS’ performance and handling a refined edge similar to a professional chef crafting a gourmet meal.

The Maybach GLS 600 showcases quiet efficiency and enjoyable handling. Our test vehicle rolled on 23-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero rubber; paired with outstanding active suspension, it absorbs road imperfections effortlessly.
Powering the 2021 Mercedes-Maybach GLS is a twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8 engine that produces 550 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The standard EQ Boost 48-volt electrical system can supply up to an extra 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, allowing the GLS 600 to function as a mild hybrid at lower speeds.
The latest “Maybach” mode configures the drivetrain and suspension to provide outstanding comfort for passengers, optimizing the ride quality. This mode reduces gear shifts and enhances the driving experience for those enjoying the luxurious back seats.
