Top Reasons to Explore Bangkok’s Iconic Khao San Road

iBestTravel’s “Give it a Try” series highlights must-see travel destinations, showcasing popular yet often overlooked experiences. Austin Bush, a local photographer, delves into why Khao San Road in Bangkok deserves your attention beyond its touristy reputation.

Khao San Road is recognized as one of the most iconic backpacker destinations worldwide. Though its loud, vibrant atmosphere, inflated prices, and persistent tuk-tuk drivers may deter some, it remains a must-visit location. The intriguing history behind the neon lights is what makes it special. Indeed, Khao San Road offers an exhilarating base for exploring the nightlife unique to Bangkok.

Khao San Road’s Backpacker Beginnings

While it may not be evident at first glance, Khao San Road possesses a fascinating past. Once connected to the Chao Phraya River via a canal, it served as a transport route for goods, particularly rice. The term ‘khao saan’ translates to “milled rice” in Thai, and in the 19th century, the street was lined with shophouses selling this staple. The transformation into a popular tourist destination began in 1977 when Joe Cummings, author of a notable guide to Thailand, discovered affordable accommodation options here.

Having visited Khao San Road in 1997, I saw the strip begin its transformation, accommodating the burgeoning backpacker culture of the late ’90s and early 2000s. Despite challenges posed during the pandemic—where tourist numbers plunged, and plans were proposed for significant changes—Khao San Road has rebounded, maintaining its reputation as a backpacker hotspot.

Counterculture Vibes

Known as a key stop on the hippie trail during the late ’70s and early ’80s, Khao San Road attracted alternative thinkers from all over the globe. Its proximity to Silpakorn University, a hub for arts and liberal thought, contributed to its reputation as a gathering spot for students seeking affordable entertainment. The backpacker boom transformed Khao San into a more mainstream destination, prompting some local students to seek quieter, less expensive venues nearby.

However, recent events, such as the pandemic, reopened doors for university students looking for affordable nightlife options, reinforcing the area’s continued relevance. The recent legalization of cannabis in Thailand has added another layer to Khao San Road’s identity as vendors now sell various marijuana products, referencing its countercultural roots.

Khao San Road becomes especially lively between November and January, attracting throngs of visitors during Bangkok’s peak tourist season. The street also becomes a central location for spirited celebrations during traditional festivals, such as Songkran, the Thai New Year.

For an authentic experience, consider visiting the VS Guest House, reputedly the oldest guesthouse on Khao San Road, which opened its doors in the early 1980s.
