Explore Japan This Fall as Travel Restrictions Ease

Essential Guide to Traveling to Japan: Entry Rules and Visa Requirements

Travel to Japan has faced significant restrictions since the borders closed two-and-a-half years ago. Consequently, it has been challenging for tourists to visit, as only organized group tours were permitted into the country for most of 2022. Recently, however, the government announced changes, allowing self-guided trips once again.

Japan’s New Entry Rules

As of September 7, tourists can return to Japan without a guide, thanks to new, relaxed policies. However, travelers must book flights and accommodations through a licensed travel agency, ensuring a point of contact in the country.

This means that, for the time being, the only way to enter Japan is via package vacations, whether guided or self-guided, based on personal preferences. It is crucial to adhere to health measures, including wearing masks and presenting a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of departure, if not fully vaccinated.

Applying for a Visa to Visit Japan

The visa exemption scheme for Japan remains suspended, meaning all tourists need to secure a tourist visa prior to travel. Interested visitors can obtain a certificate for the ERFS (Entrants, Returnees Follow-up System) through their travel agency. Once processed, this document allows you to apply for a visa at your local Japanese embassy or directly with the agency.

eVisa Availability for US and Canadian Citizens

A recent eVisa scheme allows US and Canadian citizens to apply for tourist and business travel visas online. Before initiating the application, travelers need to obtain the ERFS certificate through their travel agency. Special considerations apply to those visiting family members, who must provide proof of kinship instead of applying for the ERFS.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements

Japan categorizes countries based on COVID-19 risk, labeled as blue, yellow, or red. Travelers from blue countries can either present proof of vaccination or take a COVID-19 test before traveling. Notable blue countries include the US, UK, Australia, and others. Additional requirements apply for travelers from yellow and red countries, such as mandatory testing upon arrival and quarantine measures.

For those interested in visiting Japan, staying informed about entry rules, visa applications, and health regulations is essential to ensure a smooth travel experience.
