Subaru’s BRZ sports car skips the 2021 model year as it gears up for a redesign. Before considering one of the remaining 2020 models left on dealer lots, let’s dive into its upcoming replacement. Marking the model’s second generation, the 2022 BRZ promises significant dynamic and styling improvements while continuing to deliver affordable rear-drive sports car athleticism.

2022 Subaru BRZ: Turbo Power?

Despite featuring basic rear-drive architecture similar to the prior BRZ, the new model is expected to include several dynamic alterations such as additional chassis bracing and reworked suspension components. Consequently, the 2022 BRZ should maintain the playful essence of the first-gen model.

In fact, the driving experience may even be more exhilarating with the introduction of a new 2.4-liter flat-four engine. Like the previous 2.0-liter engine, this new powerplant continues to forgo forced induction; however, the larger four-cylinder should enhance the 2.0-liter’s 205-hp peak output, while also aiming to eliminate the outgoing engine’s agricultural qualities.

The 2022 BRZ will continue offering buyers the option to engage in a manual driving experience through a standard six-speed manual transmission. An automatic transmission featuring steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters is likely to be an option as well. Unlike its closest competitor, the two-seat Mazda MX-5 Miata, the 2022 BRZ will once again provide seating for four, thanks to a small rear bench seat accommodating two passengers. Notably, the vehicle should still have the capability to transport four sets of wheels with tires mounted, allowing drivers to take an extra set to the track without compromising their street tires.

Although the interior layout will largely remain similar to previous models, the BRZ’s interior is expected to look and feel more inviting. This enhancement is attributed to a revamped dashboard that incorporates higher-quality materials and integrates Subaru’s latest infotainment system. Anticipate the introduction of a touchscreen infotainment system that is notably larger than the outgoing model’s 7.0-inch display.

Images of the 2022 BRZ test vehicles showcase an evolutionary design that retains the essential proportions from its predecessor, including a long hood and a compact rear end. However, closer examination reveals several noteworthy changes such as a more pronounced trunk lip and larger taillights that blend with the trunk’s design lines.

Newly designed, larger side vents located aft of the front wheels replace the slim, previous versions. Furthermore, the new BRZ features a front-end design with a wider grille and more upright headlights, likely incorporating standard LED illumination.
