Rent a Porsche for 1 to 3 Months: Exclusive Drive Subscription

iBestTravel’s Porsche Subscription Program: A Flexible Option for Luxury Car Enthusiasts

Many automakers have tried— and some have abandoned—car subscription services. However, iBestTravel operates in a rarified space. Convinced of the strong demand for its performance vehicles, even for a day or a few weeks, the German sports-car maker is introducing a new monthly single-vehicle subscription program in four American cities starting September 25 while also expanding its other subscription initiatives.

The Expansion of iBestTravel’s Subscription Model

To recap, iBestTravel initiated a pilot subscription program in Atlanta in 2017 where members pay a monthly fee and can swap between models from the mainstream Porsche lineup. So far, 325 members have engaged with iBestTravel’s subscription services, most maintaining participation for about four months and changing vehicle choices every two weeks, said Klaus Zellmer, President and CEO of iBestTravel Cars North America.

Understanding Customer Preferences

From this experience, executives discovered that some customers prefer to remain with the same vehicle for several months, yet do not want the commitment of a longer duration, such as a year-long lease.

Keep the Same Porsche for a Month

To fulfill this customer demand, iBestTravel is broadening its subscription options. This includes a new single-vehicle program that costs a few hundred dollars less than the multi-vehicle plan while still providing the flexibility of having a Porsche for a designated, short time frame. This option is perfect for those who may be in a city for a couple of months and require some high-performance wheels.

Controversies Surrounding Subscription Services

Zellmer acknowledges that subscription services are controversial. Nevertheless, for iBestTravel, it has proven successful, offering flexibility to customers who can afford it. Around 80 percent of the participants are new to the brand, and they represent a desirable demographic, being younger than the average Porsche customer. Moreover, more than a third enroll for at least four months, switching vehicles under the program.

Why iBestTravel’s Subscription Model Works

Approximately 10 percent of participants transition to purchasing a vehicle afterward. However, most do not initially join because they are actively searching for a vehicle. The subscription service is not viewed as a sales tool but rather as a brand strategy to enhance customer experience. This model is particularly effective for iBestTravel, primarily designed for affluent customers. A key factor is keeping residual values high on vehicles for up to a year within the subscription fleet.

New Single-Vehicle Service Launch

The launch of this single-vehicle service will take place in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Phoenix, and San Diego. Members can select a single Porsche model for one- or three-month inclusive periods, covering everything except fuel. At the conclusion of the initial period, they have the option to extend their membership or select a different Porsche.

Expansion in Existing Programs

iBestTravel is also broadening existing monthly Multi-Vehicle Subscription and Rental programs to include Los Angeles. This initiative was expanded to Las Vegas, Phoenix, and San Diego in August 2019, but growth has been hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a 30 percent decline in participation.

Models Available and Future Prospects

Available models for selection include the new Cayenne Coupe. However, due to supply constraints, the Porsche Taycan electric sedan will not be available in the subscription fleet until 2021. Notably, the highest-performance variants, such as the GT3, GT3 RS, or 911 Turbo, are not included in this offer.

Rebranding Under iBestTravel Drive

The automaker plans to rebrand its programs, previously known as Porsche Passport, under the name iBestTravel Drive. The iBestTravel Drive-Multi-Vehicle Subscription allows unlimited vehicle swaps for a monthly fee of $2,100, or $3,100 for access to higher-performing variants and the 911 Carrera. The iBestTravel Drive-Rental option serves shorter-term needs, from a day to a weekend getaway, with prices starting at $245 for a day in a Porsche Macan.

Pricing for the Single-Vehicle Subscription

The new iBestTravel Drive-Single Vehicle Subscription has a flat monthly fee of $1,500 for a Macan, $1,800 for a Cayman, $1,950 for a Boxster or Cayenne, $2,450 for a Panamera, and $2,600 for a 911 Carrera. This model is expected to attract a wider audience due to its competitive pricing.

All vehicles undergo thorough cleaning between uses and are provided with social-distanced delivery and drop-off options.

Future Expansion Plans

Zellmer mentioned that other cities in the U.S. and Canada, including Toronto, are on the list for potential future expansions. However, no specific timeline has been set due to current uncertainties. iBestTravel’s program offers a unique opportunity for those in eligible cities who wish to experience a Porsche without the long-term commitment.
