2021 Volkswagen Atlas: A Comprehensive Review

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show recently. This updated version of the popular midsize SUV features enhanced safety elements, updated styling, and the availability of 4Motion all-wheel drive for the standard 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine.

Stylish Design and Enhanced Features

Inspired by its smaller sibling, the two-row Atlas Cross Sport, the 2021 Atlas showcases a refined aesthetic. Its new grille incorporates three chrome strips, harmoniously blending with the daytime running lights of the headlamps. Moreover, reshaped front and rear bumpers increase the overall length by 3 inches while maintaining the same 117.3-inch wheelbase. For 2021, LED head- and taillights come standard.

Interior Upgrades

The interior of the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas has received thoughtful updates, including a modern steering wheel, available contrast stitching, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes standard on most trims.

Powertrain Options

One of the most significant updates for the 2021 model year is the introduction of a new powertrain option. While the Atlas continues with the standard 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine and the available 3.6L VR6, both engines can now be paired with 4Motion all-wheel drive, allowing customers greater flexibility. Front-wheel drive remains standard.

Performance and Safety Features

The 3.6L VR6 engine of the 2021 Atlas produces a robust 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, while the 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine generates 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Both engines utilize direct injection and are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

As with the previous model, the Atlas includes essential safety features such as forward collision monitoring with pedestrian detection, automated emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Enhanced driver-assist technologies, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance, are also offered in higher trims. Notably, the 2021 Atlas will include the new Dynamic Road Sign Display, previously seen in the Atlas Cross Sport.

Sales Performance

The Atlas has emerged as a crucial player in the Volkswagen lineup, accounting for nearly 25% of all VW sales. Remarkably, the sales of the midsize family SUV increased by 37% last year compared to the previous year, significantly outpacing the overall industry trend and underscoring its relevance in the competitive SUV market.
