Stolen Vehicles Collide: An Unusual Incident in Oregon

Imagine you’re out and about in your Buick Regal. It’s been stolen, but why let that ruin your day? You decide to enjoy a morning cruise. However, you’re also under the influence of intoxicants—a separate, very poor decision. Suddenly, to your shock, a Toyota Land Cruiser crashes into your pilfered Buick. This peculiar scenario might sound exaggerated, but the truth often exceeds fiction—even in real-life events like this one.

According to the Newberg-Dundee police department in Oregon, the Toyota Land Cruiser involved in the collision was also reported stolen. At the time of the incident, the Toyota was fleeing from police, who had attempted to pull it over shortly after its theft when it was spotted driving through town. The saying goes that crime doesn’t solve itself, but in this case, it seems to have uncovered an unexpected connection.

Randy Lee Cooper, a 27-year-old resident of Portland, was arrested at the scene for stealing the Toyota Land Cruiser and engaging in a police chase. His charges, per the Newberg-Dundee police, include unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, attempting to evade police, assault-3, reckless driving, and other related crimes. Ironically, no credit was given for indirectly aiding in the resolution of a three-week-old car theft case involving the Buick Regal. Additionally, Kristin Nicole Begue, a 25-year-old from Newberg, was booked on charges of DUI and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

The Newberg-Dundee police aptly summarized the unusual circumstances in their press release, stating: “Here’s a new one for you to start the week.” It’s worth noting that stealing cars, driving under the influence, and combining both activities, especially if it leads to further collisions—such as with other car thieves or innocent parties—is a perilous choice.
