Volkswagen Touareg R: A Performance Hybrid SUV
Volkswagen’s R performance brand, known for delivering some of the most exciting models, is expanding internationally with the introduction of a 456-hp gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid version of the Touareg crossover SUV. This model comes as the luxurious Touareg that VW discontinued in the U.S. back in 2017 due to slow sales.
Global Expansion of the R Family
While the U.S. market currently offers just one R performance model—the Golf R—other regions will soon enjoy a sporty iteration of the Touareg in addition to R-badged versions of models like the T-Roc. Despite its previous underperformance in the U.S. market, car enthusiasts still have a soft spot for the high-quality, engineering-driven Touareg, which shares components with iconic vehicles including the Porsche Cayenne.
Performance Specifications
The Touareg R showcases impressive performance with its turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine combined with a robust electric motor. The electric motor alone produces 134 horsepower, allowing the vehicle to reach speeds of up to 87 mph solely on electric power. Powering this electric motor is a 14.1-kWh battery located under the luggage compartment, and an eight-speed automatic gearbox ensures that power is smoothly delivered to all four wheels via the standard all-wheel-drive system. In total, the Touareg R offers a remarkable output of 456 horsepower.
Driving Range and Efficiency
While exact figures for the Touareg R’s electric-only driving range are still undisclosed, its corporate counterpart, the Bentley Bentayga Hybrid, provides some insight. The Bentayga features a similar powertrain and achieves an estimated range of 16 miles from a 17.3-kWh battery. Due to its lighter weight, the Touareg R likely delivers a similar or better performance in terms of hybrid capabilities, making it a more agile option on the road. It is anticipated to reach 60 mph in approximately 5.2 seconds, demonstrating significant acceleration for an SUV of its size.
Availability
Unfortunately, American consumers will not have the opportunity to experience the Touareg R, as a vehicle of this price range, combined with its premium features, is unlikely to be introduced in the U.S. market. Conversely, European buyers can expect to receive the Touareg R model by summer, enjoying the blend of luxury and performance it offers.
