“This journey showed me that while the world may not always be perfectly accessible, the human spirit’s capacity for kindness and assistance knows no bounds.”

Welcome to Travel Without Limits, a limited series dedicated to all things accessible travel. For World Disability Pride Month, we’ve asked some of our favourite Disabled travellers to share their most impactful experiences and transformative travels.
My Journey to India: A Cultural Odyssey
As a British Sikh, India has always felt like a second home to me. My dad and both sets of grandparents were born there, creating a deep familial connection to this vibrant country. Growing up, I enjoyed wonderful holidays with my family in a rural village in Punjab and was always eager to explore more of what India had to offer. Although I wished I had taken a gap year to travel, I decided to take a sabbatical from work, leading me to embark on a journey that would change my life forever.
Taking the Leap
After navigating the hassle of getting a visa, the day I left for the airport was emotional. I hugged my mom tightly, and we both cried—this was a significant moment for me. Living a sheltered life until then, stepping out into the world as a South Asian Disabled woman was both exhilarating and intimidating.
Adventure Awaits
Living with the uncertainty of Brittle Bone Disease has shaped my perspective on adventure. My journey spanned three months, during which I traveled across 11 different states in India, each feeling like its own unique country. Without a set itinerary, I embraced daily spontaneity, the most freeing experience what I had ever felt.
Memorable Experiences
- Kayaking in the serene backwaters of Kerala.
- Exploring the architectural splendour of the Taj Mahal.
- Joining the vibrant camel festival in Pushkar.
- Choosing from the many luxurious beaches of Goa.
Each day was filled with new adventures and discoveries, making it one of the most enriching experiences of my life.
The Beauty of Independence
For the first time, I was wholly in control of my adventure, unbound by schedules. Exploring India’s rich culture without limits was exhilarating. I accomplished things I never thought I could as a Disabled individual, even trying parasailing. This journey proved that I could navigate and thrive in the world on my terms.
The Essence of Travel
Having a body that doesn’t always cooperate instills a sense of urgency to live life fully. With my condition set to worsen as I grow older, I prioritize experiences over possessions. I’ve traveled to 44 countries, cherishing enriching memories over material gains.
Unforgettable Encounters
During my travels, I met the Dalai Lama and attended one of his public teachings, an encounter that left a lasting impression on me. Furthermore, going on a tiger safari in Bandhavgarh National Park was extraordinary; witnessing these magnificent creatures was a priceless experience. Additionally, I savored delectable momos that I still crave!
Challenges Faced
However, my journey was not without its difficulties. Coinciding with India’s demonetisation, cash withdrawals became a daily struggle. Accessibility posed its challenges—public transport, hotels, and societal attitudes towards Disabled individuals were sometimes unreliable. Yet, the kindness of the Indian people shone brightly, with strangers helping me even amid language barriers.
Lessons Learned
Travelling solo as a Disabled person taught me valuable lessons. While I overpacked, carrying a suitcase that was cumbersome, many people came to my rescue. The kindness of strangers—from hotel staff to fellow travelers—made my journey far more manageable than anticipated.
A Transformative Experience
Upon returning from India, I faced challenges adapting back into everyday life. There was no doubt I had transformed during my time abroad. Shortly after settling back into my routine, I made a bold decision: I quit my job. This journey instilled in me the courage to live life authentically. Now, I work for myself, relishing my newfound freedom. This trip allowed me to connect deeply with my heritage and embrace the challenges of life, showing me that the world is full of kindness and support.
Celebrating Disability Pride Month
As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, I reflect on how this journey embodies the spirit of the month. It’s about breaking barriers, embracing challenges, and celebrating our unique stories. My trip to India was more than just an adventure; it was a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and connection. It revealed that, despite the world’s challenges, the human spirit’s capacity for kindness knows no bounds.
