Rising Costs of UK Passports
Travelling inevitably incurs expenses, and despite thorough planning and budgeting, unexpected costs often arise. Airlines have hidden fees related to baggage that may not be disclosed until just before booking, while peak travel times come with increased prices. Additionally, some destinations levy a tourist tax on top of accommodation fees.
This year, the UK government’s Spring Budget introduced several financial burdens impacting travelers. Notably, an increase in Air Passenger Duty (APD) means that passengers will pay more on outbound flights from the UK. Furthermore, the upcoming implementation of Europe’s tourist visa (Etias) in 2025 will require non-EU travelers to pay a fee before entering.
The cost of UK passports has experienced a significant rise for the second time within 14 months. In February 2023, the government increased passport fees by 9%, raising the price for a standard adult online application from £75.50 to £82.50.
On Thursday, April 11, 2024, the Home Office announced another price hike. This latest increase of 7% affects both adults and children, with varying costs depending on whether applications are submitted online or by post. For instance, adults applying via post will now face a fee of £100, which is over £15 more than what it cost at the start of 2023.
Guy Hobbs, a travel expert, indicated that these raises might surprise travelers renewing their passports. “While these latest price increases may reflect rising production or processing costs, the UK passport is becoming one of the costliest in Europe, and many will be stunned by the new prices,” he noted.
