A mere twenty-five million years ago, Iceland burst out of the icy sea in the form of a volcanic eruption, forming an other-worldly charcoal-colored landscape. Here, infinite types of moss grow, steam bellows from geysers, and boiling hot geothermal pools bubble away, daring you to stick a toe in (don’t).

Arriving at the vibrant Iceland Airwaves festival allows for exploration of Reykjavik’s cultural dynamism. This festival offers a concentrated glimpse into the Icelandic creative scene. “The weather affects all aspects of life here,” shares Árni Árnason, one of the festival’s organizers. “People aspire less, thus making music for the sake of making music.” This perspective underscores a genuine, grassroots connection to creativity.
