In his previous outings as Hercule Poirot, Kenneth Branagh has delivered classics such as Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. As both star and director, his collaboration with writer Michael Green offers a fresh take on Agatha Christie’s beloved detective, meticulously combining familiarity with new elements, psychological depth, and high production values that radiate through the cast, costumes, and locations.

Explore A Haunting in Venice

This time around, Branagh has turned to a less familiar source, yet has maintained the same grand scope. In A Haunting in Venice, Poirot leads a peaceful retirement in the stunning landscape of Italy, where, shielded by a bodyguard (Riccardo Scamarcio), he indulges in gardening and leisurely walks. However, the unexpected arrival of his old friend Ariadne Oliver (portrayed by the talented Tina Fey) draws him back into the fray through a séance hosted by Mrs. Reynolds (played by Michelle Yeoh), compelling him to engage his little grey cells in the search for a murderer.

The Cast of Characters

This engaging mystery introduces a host of suspects, including the moody Dr. Ferrier played by Jamie Dornan, and opera singer Rowena Drake portrayed by Kelly Reilly. Camille Cottin, known for her roles in Call My Agent and Killing Eve, plays the housekeeper, adding yet more intrigue to the gathering.

The Enigmatic City of Venice

Venice itself serves as a captivating backdrop. Although Christie’s original story was set in the English village of Woodleigh Common, Branagh transports us to one of the world’s most enchanting cities, trading the rural manor for an eerie palazzo featuring damp dungeons, shadowy corridors, and temperamental chandeliers.

Why Choose Venice?

As Branagh remarked to Empire, “It’s exotic, gothic, and mysterious.” The city, which has served as a mesmerizing backdrop in previous films like Don’t Look Now and Death in Venice, continues to amaze audiences. Its vibrant splendor allows Branganh’s vision to truly shine, creating an experience where nothing is as it appears to be.

The Palazzos

Most of the film’s action unfolds in a dark, canalside palazzo that belongs to the ill-fated singer Rowena Drake. While it may look authentic, this setting is entirely fabricated, constructed entirely at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, UK.

Branagh and production designer John Paul Kelly scoured Venice for a suitable location but were told by locals of the many “cursed” palazzos, which only heightened their apprehension. Hence, they designed an actual set featuring a functional canal and intricate alignments, allowing for seamless navigation throughout the narrative packed with unexpected twists and turns.

Exploring Venice

Outside of the palazzo, much of the film captures the true essence of Venice. Here are some key locations:

  • San Giorgio Maggiore: This island and its stunning basilica play host to Poirot during his retirement, showcasing the local marketplace’s charm.
  • The Grand Canal: The film features Poirot traveling through the canals on vaporetti and gondolas, capturing the essence of Venetian life.
  • Scala Contarini del Bovolo: A mesmerizing spiral staircase that dates back to the 15th century, it is a noteworthy location for film enthusiasts.
  • Palazzo Pisani: Rich in history, this palazzo, now a music school, reflects the grandeur of Venetian architecture from the 17th century.
  • Santa Maria dei Miracoli: Featuring intricately detailed marble work, this church is celebrated for its exquisite Renaissance design.
  • Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio: A local hangout spot marked by cylindrical towers, offering a glimpse into Venice’s historical reputation.
  • Piazza San Marco: Highlights include the Torre dell’Orologio, which offers breathtaking views of the city and draws tourists from around the globe.

A Haunting in Venice is in cinemas from 15 September 2023
