However, travellers hoping to immortalize their experiences along the Italian Riviera may encounter some challenges this summer. According to Italian news outlet Il Post, the mayor of Portofino has implemented new regulations to manage tourist activity in notably crowded areas.
As of Easter weekend, Mayor Matteo Viacava has designated red zones to reduce congestion during peak tourist season. These measures are aimed at ensuring the safety of both tourists and locals. Although photography is not entirely banned, excessive lingering in specific areas could lead to fines.
The red zones are currently located in the heart of Portofino. Il Post describes the restricted area as, “the region between Piazza Martiri dell’Olivetta and the Calata Marconi quay, extending north, and between the square and the public toilets of the Umberto I pier to the south.”
Understanding the Rules
These restrictions are enforced between 10:30 AM and 6:00 PM, conveniently allowing visitors to snap sunset photos afterward. Nevertheless, it’s essential to respect the local regulations to avoid any unpleasant encounters, such as the potential €275 fine for overstaying in these areas.

Portofino is not the only tourist destination to introduce regulations regarding photography and crowd control. For instance, visitors to the Tower of London’s Jewel House may face strict enforcement against photography. Meanwhile, some locations, like Mecca in Saudi Arabia, implement rules out of deep respect for cultural practices.
Moreover, in places like Pamplona, Spain, taking pictures with the running bulls amidst narrow streets can lead to hefty fines and, understandably, severe injuries. Therefore, it is wise for travellers to stay informed about local rules, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience while exploring the scenic beauty of Italy.
