Why Choose Banyan Tree Resort in AlUla?
AlUla is breathtakingly beautiful, offering a unique blend of luxury and rich history. Banyan Tree Resort elevates this desert experience, situated amidst 200,000 years of human history, an oasis of 2.3 million date palms, and impressive sandstone tombs carved by the ancient Nabataeans, the same architects behind the heritage sites at Petra in Jordan.
Set the Scene
The resort sprawls across 10,000 square meters of AlUla’s Ashar Valley, an expanse of stunning pale desert enveloped by stunning rock formations. As the first light of dawn touches these rocks, they reveal a honey-colored hue that transforms into warm pinks at sunset.
Arrival to the resort is by car along a sandy road, where 47 standalone villas seamlessly blend into the landscape. The North and South Pavilions serve as the main hubs, connected by a three-kilometer track that meanders through dunes and rocks. While exploring requires a buggy currently, bicycles will soon be available to enhance your experience of this mesmerizing environment.
The Backstory
Saudi Arabia opened its doors to tourism in 2019. Although AlUla’s heritage sites have long been known to archaeologists, only recently have developments made them accessible to international visitors. Despite being in its early stages, there exists a genuine enthusiasm among both the staff and locals eager to share the wonders of this historic region with travelers.
Banyan Tree has transformed a site that previously housed the Ashar Tented Resort and five Royal Villas, with plans for redevelopment for the upcoming winter season 2023-24.
The Rooms
Cool, spacious villas, varying from 77 to 240 square meters, feature floor-to-ceiling windows that frame breathtaking views. Each villa is nestled beneath a large canopy, providing essential shade while allowing for natural ventilation. About half of the villas overlook unique rock formations, while the rest present views towards Maraya, the world’s largest mirrored building and a modern architectural marvel.
Interior designs emphasize minimalism and tranquility, utilizing color schemes that echo the desert landscape. Ceiling patterns resemble Nabataean tombs at Hegra, symbolizing a serene resting place, while the warm color palette features local art that highlights the region’s heritage.
Bathrooms are designed for relaxation, boasting oversized tubs complemented by outdoor courtyards and showers. The majority of villas offer private pools, creating a perfect retreat after a day spent exploring heritage sites.
Dining Experience
Drawing from Banyan Tree’s Thai roots, the resort hosts the exquisite Thai restaurant, Saffron. Authentically crafted by a talented kitchen team from Thailand, their vibrant dishes create a unique culinary experience in the desert. The resort also features Harrat, which serves a selection of Middle Eastern and international cuisine, though its menu currently feels limited compared to Saffron.
Wellness and Relaxation
Wellness is integral to Banyan Tree’s ethos, with a range of spa treatments available in calming environments adorned with natural materials reflecting the surrounding desert. Forthcoming offerings will include specialized treatments in a hidden cave and holistic experiences such as yoga and sound baths.
The highlight of the spa is the infinity-edge rock pool, uniquely set within a canyon, providing stunning views over the valley ideal for relaxation following treatments or simply enjoying a refreshing swim.
Exceptional Service
Visitors can expect warm, heartfelt hospitality at Banyan Tree. Each villa is attended by a dedicated host, ensuring personalized service throughout your stay. The team, consisting of a diverse group of staff members, fosters a welcoming atmosphere despite occasional language barriers, creating an environment enriched by different cultures.
Exploring the Surroundings
The remote Ashar Valley poses limited accessibility but offers a self-guided Rock Art Trail showcasing petroglyphs dating back 3,000 years. Spotting these ancient carvings of animals and daily life adds an exciting dimension to your visit.
Dining options in the area include Maraya Social, located atop the Maraya building, and Tama at the Habitas resort, where local produce enhances the international and Middle Eastern menus.
Family-Friendly Activities
While primarily focused on relaxation, Banyan Tree offers various activities appealing to adventurous families, such as horse riding and educational experiences like stargazing, perfect for nighttime exploration with astronomers available to guide you through the constellations.
Commitment to Sustainability
Despite the challenges of luxury accommodations in the desert, Banyan Tree makes commendable efforts towards sustainability. The resort is committed to eliminating single-use plastics, sourcing an impressive 65% of its food from within Saudi Arabia, and employing environmentally friendly practices, including solar-powered lighting and eco-friendly amenities.
Accessibility
For guests with mobility impairments, two villas are wheelchair accessible. The property continues to seek solutions for ease of movement throughout the resort.
